Disabilities impact learning. Students with disabilities need specially designed instruction, assistive technologies, accommodations, accessible instructional materials, and related services that are designed to reduce or eliminate any barriers to learning that are a result of the disability. This is a critical need for Florida educators and administrators as our largest achievement gap is students with disabilities.
This online resource was designed to help educators understand the various ways Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD), Other Health Impairments (OHI), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and Orthopedic Impairments (OI) can impact learning and behavior. For each of these areas, we will start by looking at the requirements for eligibility in the State of Florida and then build on the areas of impact highlighted in the eligibility definitions. Universally designed classroom instruction that includes specially designed instruction and related supports/services can increase academic achievement for students with disabilities.
