Tearing down stigmas rooted in society by the Medical Model

The issues that we are going to address are the flaws within the medical model of disability that result in discrimination against the disabled community. The medical model of disability treats disabilities as defects that are in need of treatment, causing able-bodied people to be seen as the norm, resulting in stigma and discrimination surrounding disabilities. The stigmas and discrimination are evident in many different areas, specifically the medical field, education, and civil law.

This issue has been chosen to address because the medical model’s outdated ideas and rhetoric is negatively impacting the lives of the disabled community. When comparing the social and medical models of disability, the social model implying that disability is located in the environment and that no one is inherently disabled in a bodily way, you become disabled when you are in an environment that isn’t accessible to you. The goal of the social model of disability is to modify the built environment. The social model should be the blueprint for disability models, it implies that there is not something wrong with the individual, it is the environment that is disabling, not a flaw within the body.

The primary goal of this website is to collect and share narratives of discrimination and stigma that are perpetuated by the medical model of disability.
