This week I was honored to be accepted into a 1-week mini batch at the Recurse Center (formerly "Hacker School") in Brooklyn, NY. And, finally, I decided to roll-up my sleeves and dig into auditing android security with the ultimate goal of finding out what was responsible for creating (and then deleting) all these screenshots. Well, with no thanks to Google, I did find the source. And the codebase is integrated into AOSP. But (spoiler), it's not something to sweat about. Though it is a fun journey ?

If I were trying to do this on a RHEL server, the tools-of-choice would be auditctl and ausearch. So, I thought: "Android is linux. I just have to install the auditd toolset, and I'll be able to use auditctl on my android shell." Oh boy, how ignorant I was..

Well friends, the selinux policies are compiled to a binary stored in the root of the android filesystem at "/sepolicy". In absense of auditctl, sepolicy-inject exists to turn that binary back into a human-read/write-able policy file, re-compile it, and copy it back onto the android device--effectively allowing the user to update the selinux policies. There's a problem though: at the time of writing, sepolicy-inject hasn't been updated in over 2 years and, in order to use it, you have to download 40-100G worth of Android source code, provision a very specific OS build environment, and hope to not spend a week fighting with hair-pulling compilation errors.

Googling for the /data/system_ce/0/snapshots/ directory yields a few results of people who experienced the same issue as me, and the root cause is clear: It's persisted images taken by android for the "recent apps" navigation.

Hello, i'd please like to know how to safely root your device, I dont care if the phone bricks, I just want a non-malicious or infected apk or application that I can use for rooting my Samsung A300 (2016( Android version 5.0.1). Currently only the Basic Photo scan of diskdigger is available.

I had to factory reset my phone and I tried all softwares including diskdigger and photorec. They either asked for root, or did not acknowledged my phone or could not recover anything but contacts that too the inbuilt ones. Wish one them worked! I literally tried every free software that popped up in the first page of search.

One of the problems today is what happens if your Smartphone goes on the fritz. You have lost all your photos, your addresses, and your personal data. If you are using the advanced features of your android OS, you may have lost even more. The usual way was to use Disk Digger to recover your data. However, there are problems with this approach as we will see later. Disk Digger is a great way to recover lost files on a disk drive, USB, and even under Linux. It has now branched into Android as well and offers two versions to help you do just that. It is reasonably efficient in finding most of the deleted or damaged files on your Smartphone and recover them back fast.

If you have synced the data before, you can recover from the backup file. If not, I think you should not add more data to your device anymore. Then, it is better for you to try some professional recovery methods, like diskdigger or Recuva, or you can also try third-party data recovery programs, MobiKin Android Recovery.

Android is running on linux, and as such, you would have to use the posix libs or the standard C ones. This is independent from android, except that you need to use NDK to integrate that functionality in your app. AFAIK, there's no droid-specific api to do that. Here's a thread that might get you going.

Diskdigger is one of the popular app for windows which allows you to recover your deleted files, now it was also available for the android devices. This App is available completely free of charge and you can download it from the Google play store. With this free app you can recover deleted photos and images from your Android device internal memory or memory card. It helps you to find your lost pictures and lets you restore them, or send them to an email account.

The Diskdigger android app is quite useful for recovering images from your android mobile that you were accidentally deleted, even if the memory card has been reformatted. Currently the app is in the beta stage and will only recover the .JPG and .PNG files of your device. e24fc04721
