I have some old images of old Linux filesystems in flat file format. they can be used by Bochs, but I need to run them with Virtual Box. Virtual Box cannot use images in this format, so I need to convert these images from flat file to .vmdk file format. Is there any way to do this?

You can use this image in VirtualBox as is, but depending on the guest OS it might not be visible immediately. For example, I experimented on using this method with a Windows guest OS and I had to do the following to give it a drive letter:

Maybe you should try using Starwind V2V Converter, you can get it from here - It also supports IMG disk format and performs sector-by sector conversion between IMG, VMDK or VHD into and from any of them without making any changes to source image. This tool is free :)

Just to give you an another option, you could use as well. dd2vmdk is a *nix-based program that allows you to mount raw disk images (created by dd, dcfldd, dc3dd, ftk imager, etc) by taking the raw image, analyzing the master boot record (physical sector 0), and getting specific information that is need to create a vmdk file.

But if sparse files are handled transparently, it might actually create a sparse file without writing anything to the virtual disk, ironically preventing me from turning the virtual disk image into a sparse file itself. :) Does it?

PartImage can create disk images that only store the used blocks of a filesystem, thus drastically reducing the required space by ignoring unused block. I don't think you can directly mount the resulting images, but going:

Has anyone been able to get this to work with the Apple IIe Card installer disks? Have one of these cards and would love to use it, but can not for the life of me figure out how to get the IMG files onto the Mac where they would be able to be executed. Just discovered this utility and thought I had found my answer, but it says they are not in Diskcopy 4.2 format. Any ideas?

Img and Image are filename extensions, not any specific format of disk image. DiskCopy 4.2 disk images typically have a Img filename extension, but not all files with a Img filename extension are DiskCopy 4.2 disk images. You might also encounter DiskCopy 6.3 disk images, or other formats. DiskCopy 6.3 is discussed in section 7.1 of the Floppy Emu instruction manual: -instructions.pdf

While I think I already know the answer to my question, I am wanting to figure out if something can be done. I am wanting to see if there is any way possible to convert a Mac OS X disk image to a VMWare compatible format that will allow me to boot the image in Fusion.

The big thing I am wanting to do is have Carbon Copy Cloner create a disk image in a remote location and back up the Mac OS X boot drive to it daily. In the event of a catastrophe, I would like to convert that disk image to something that Fusion could boot up. I'm essentially trying to stitch together a solution similar to what the PC people do when they virtualize a server in the event of a fire, flood, tornado, etc.

I found this discussion online that is close to what I want to do, but not sure if it is exactly what I need. The link below seems to focus on converting a physical, booted disk directly to a VMWare disk image. While this is close, I want to do the same thing but the source be a disk image that is stored off site, ready for conversion at the snap of a finger.

Nice. Now we need a bootloader. Again to the ArchWiki GRUB page (that wiki is a gold mine). We can just follow the Install to external USB stick instructions, mounting the image with kpartx instead of the stick.

I have a directory filled with data at /var/backups/disk1 that I want to convert into a virtual disk image which I'll then be able to boot using QEMU or KVM (the directory contains the file system for a virtual machine, copied out via rsync).

While there are plenty of instructions out there for converting a complete physical disk to a virtual disk, packaging up only the contents of a single directory into a virtual disk image is turning out to be much more difficult than I expected. Any ideas?

By the way, I know I can use qemu-img to convert a block device into a virtual disk (e.g., qemu-img convert -f /dev/sdc -O qcow2 disk.qcow2), so if only I could get the directory /var/backups/disk1 to appear to be a block device, then theoretically I should be able to accomplish my goal using qemu-img. I've thought about creative ways to expose the directory as a block device using NBD or a loopback device, however, and have not had success.

Now you can copy your files to /mnt/example. Once this is done, unmount it and you can use example.img as a drive in a virtual machine. If you want you can convert it from a raw image to another format like qcow2e using qemu-img, but this isn't required.

What about accessing the directory as a network share from a VM that is also mounted to your target virtual disk image? You than than just perform a simple copy from the share to the mounted disk image.

None of these answers actually worked as of QEMU 7.1.0. It became as trivial as working on the single small .vmdk file that references the other larger vmdk image files. Supposing you have the following collections of files:

Eager for a first-rated ISO file converter to compress the space-consuming ISO files to more friendly formats like MP4, MOV, AVI, etc. or to convert DVD discs/folders to ISO image to avoid damage or scratch for safe storage? You come to the right place for best solution. Top 3 ISO converters are shared here to address your needs.

With WinX DVD Ripper Platinum, you can easily convert ISO file to MP4, AVI, WMV, MOV, iPhone, iPad, Android and more, as well as clone DVD to ISO image for later burning with original quality.

Different from WinX DVD Ripper Platinum that is specialized in converting DVD/ISO/folder to a wide range of formats or creating ISO image from DVD, AnyToISO is an ISO creator that is able to convert a wide range of format to a disk image. The format ranges from BIN, MDF, PDI, CDI, NRG, to IMG file. Its interface is self-explanatory, this couldn't be any easier with AnytoISO. One thing you have to keep in mind the Lite version is free but limited within a regular CD no bigger than 870 MB.

MagicISO, also known as Magic ISO Maker, is not only an ISO converter, but also a DVD burner, backup and editing tool. It has the knack for creating, extracting, editing and burning disc image files directly, in addition to converting between DVD/ISO and BIN/CUE, UIF, NRG. However, its trial version cannot deal with the disc images larger than 300mb. MagicISO is limited to 15 virtual drives, doesn't support burning images to disks, and is not easily removed once installed.

ISO Image on Wiki: An ISO image is an archive file of an optical disc, a type of disk image composed of the data contents from every written sector on an optical disc, including the optical disc file system. ISO images can be created from optical discs by disk imaging software, or from a collection of files by optical disc authoring software...

This will not save any space (well maybe some very small portion) but it will get you one disk file rather than several. Alternately, you could just compress all the files and store the archive on your USB thing.

QEMU disk image utility for Windows. It is used for converting, creating, and consistency checking of various virtual disk formats. It is compatible with Hyper-V, KVM, VMware, VirtualBox, and Xen virtualization solutions. This build has been optimized for Windows Server (x64).

The tool Convert image file allows you to change the properties and content of existing images (OMG) or a virtual hard disk (VHD). It creates a copy of the image file (OMG) or virtual hard disk (VHD), so that the original image remains intact.

Further settings like compression, encryption or splitting images into several image files with a certain size are possible. Please note the restrictions that apply to Handling virtual hard disks (VHD).

To simplify working with Microsoft Virtual PCs (VPC), you can now convert image files into virtual drives (VHD). The converted image can be integrated as a virtual drive in the VPC, without having to install O&O DiskImage there. In a similar way, images (OMG) can be created of virtual hard disks (VHD).

When converting an image file with Windows, ensure the virtiodriver is installed.Otherwise, you will get a blue screen when launching the imagedue to lack of the virtio driver.Another option is to set the image properties as below when youupdate the image in the Image service to avoid this issue, but it will reduce virtual machine performance significantly.

Free ISO Converter is a software application which allows users to convert and export standard ISO (optical disk image) files into other formats. It is very easy to work with, so those with little previous experience should not encounter any problems along the way. Numerous output formats are supported and unlike similar programs, this package is offered at no charge.

Free ISO Converter essentially interprets any information contained within a disk image file. It can then translate this data so that it will be able to be formatted into other codecs. Some examples here may include PDI, BIN and NRG files. Although this may sound quite technical, users will be pleased to know that Free ISO Converter provides an extremely intuitive layout. Common commands such as selecting an image, choosing an output format and converting the file are all displayed clearly. A progress bar also illustrates how much time is remaining.

NOTE: VHDX is a new disk format that was introduced in Windows Server 2012. Compared to traditional VHD, VHDX has several improvements, including a special internal log to reduce the chances of data corruption, a bigger capacity (up to 64 TB) and other great features. I recommend using VHDX whenever possible.

It will create one VHD for each disk on which selected volumes reside. It preserves the partitioning information of the disk, but only copiesthe data contents for volumes on the disk that are selected. Thisenables you to capture just system volumes and exclude data volumes, forexample. e24fc04721
