What is "Readers' Advisory"?

Readers' advisory is about recommending and researching books for someone. You may be doing readers' advisory without even knowing it! Part of a librarians, or Learning Commons Facilitators, job is bringing people and books/resources together. Sometimes we need something to help us and NoveList is a wonderful resource to help. NoveList uses book lists and read-alikes to help you find something that you will like.

Accessing NoveList K-8

NoveList has a few extra steps to login than most Marigold resources do. The next few steps will show you exactly where to go. 

From the "Search" dropdown, select eResources.

Select the A to Z List to see NoveList K-8.

Select NoveList K-8 from the list. You will need to login using your Marigold barcode and password.

Using your Marigold login information, sign into the TRAC website.

NoveList K-8 is hosted by EBSCO who requires another login. Use your Marigold barcode again and select "Sign In".

From the home page, you can select Recommended Reads Lists, Advanced Search, Browse, Search, Quick Links, and more. 

Recommended Reads Lists

NoveList K-8 has staff who research and review books to create lists for people to enjoy. You can select your age range, either Teen, Ages 9-12, and Ages 0-8. Each age group will have different lists available to them. If you click on any of the lists underneath "Recommended Reads Lists" it will open another dialogue box that will have the full lists available. 

Appeal Mixer

On the home page, you can also try out NoveList K-8's Appeal Mixer. This lets you select 3 different qualities in a book that you enjoy and it will provide a list of books based on those qualities.

Appeal Mixer

You can select a number of different options for the Appeal Mixer. Below is a condensed list of the appeal options. For a full list, please see the options available on NoveList K-8.

Character options: Religions (Agnostic, Christian, Buddhist, etc.), Neurodivergent, LGBTQIA, BIPOC, Personality Traits (Quirky, Awkward, Sarcastic, etc.), Disabilities.

Illustration options: Realistic, Black-and-White, Detailed, Cartoony

Pace options: Fast-paced, Leisurely-paced, Intensifying

Storyline options: Character-Driven, World-Building, Plot-Driven, Action-Packed

Tone options: Amusing, Bleak, Feel-Good, Darkly Humorous, Suspenseful, Thought-Provoking

Writing Style: Descriptive, Lyrical, Slang-Heavy, Word-Play Filled

Advanced Search

Not sure what you want to read but you know there are specific things you're looking for? The Advanced Search can help you. Search by grade level, lexile range/AR level, author's cultural identity, number of pages, and more.

Series Read-alikes

A great feature of NoveList is that it will take appeal elements from a book or book series and find other books/series that will have a similar feel to them. Clicking on a series will open a page that shows all of the books in the series as well as the series read-alikes. 

Title Read-alikes

For each book title, NoveList will list the read-alikes. On the right-hand side of the screen, you can click on a book title or select "View All" for more options.

There are 5 options listed under Quick Links. 

Articles - List of articles about readers' advisory

Genre Guides - Detailed guides on different genres including what story elements are in a genre.

Page to Screen - List of books being made into TV shows or movies and their expected release date.

Story Elements Index (pictured above) - explains what a genre is, and what are appeals and themes.

Working With Youth - Directs adults to articles that help understand how to help the youth they're working with

Browse By

There are 3 options listed under Browse By.

Genre - takes you a list of titles separated by genre

Appeals - takes you to the Appeal Mixer

Award Winners - takes you to a list of Popular Awards. Once you select an award, it will show you current winners as well as books that have won in the past.

Folder

In the top right corner of your screen, you will see a folder icon. Throughout the site, you will see an option to add books or lists to your folder so you can remember them for later.
