Sora is a student-friendly app (created by OverDrive) that acts as a 24/7 digital branch of our school library. It’s designed specifically for K-12 students to discover and enjoy ebooks and audiobooks for both fun and classwork.
Think of it as your personal reading hub that fits in your pocket.
The Sora App can be downloaded on Kindle, Nook, Android, Apple iOS, Mac OS X and Windows.
Getting started
Install the Sora app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, or go to soraapp.com.
Step 2
In Sora, find your school (or enter your school's setup code), then sign in.
Note: If you need your sign-in information (like an ID, username, or password), talk to a teacher.
Step 3
Browse the tab and borrow a book. Your book will open so you can start reading right away.
Step 4
Close the book and go to to see all your books (including assignments). From there, you can:
Select Open book or Open audiobook to read or listen to the book.
Select Options to renew or return the book, see your notes and highlights, and more.
Helpful Tips
How to search
To search for a book, go to Explore and select search icon.
You can search for a book title, author, series, or subject.
Or, select Filters to search by format, language, reading level, and more.
By default, you'll see results from all the libraries you've added in Sora. If you only want to see results from your current library, go to menu > All Settings and turn off Search All Libraries (under "General").
How to download a book in Sora
You can download books in Sora to read or listen offline. By default, most books automatically download.
Note: You can download books in the Sora app and compatible web browsers. You won't see download options in unsupported browsers.
Downloaded books have a checkmark icon on your Shelf.
If a book didn't download automatically, you can download it with these steps:
Go to shelf.
Select Loans.
Click or tap cloud icon.
Select Download.
How to add a library
You can use Sora to browse your library and borrow books with your library card or, in some cases, your student ID.
Note: The type of account you have may limit the library books you see in Sora.
To add your library:
Click or tap menu icon.
Select Add library.
Use the search box to find and select your library. The library will open in the Explore tab and be saved so you can get back to it later.
You'll be asked to sign in the first time you try to borrow a book or place a hold. You may need to select your library branch or school before entering your library card info or student ID.
To switch between libraries in Sora, select a library from the menu or from the drop-down at the top of the Explore tab.
Where to find loans, holds, lists, and history
You can find your loans, holds, lists, and history on your Shelf.
To go to your Shelf, select shelf icon at the bottom of the screen.
From there, use the tabs at the top of the screen to switch between your loans, holds, lists, and history.
Reading goals, reading challenges, and achievements
You can set a reading goal in Sora to challenge yourself to read more. Your teacher can help you pick a reading goal that's right for you.
To set a reading goal:
Select .
Under "Settings," select Reading Goals.
Make sure Reading Goals is turned on.
Then, you can:
Select a daily reading goal time from 5 to 60 minutes.
Turn on reading goal Charts to see detailed information about your goal progress.
Turn on reading goal Notifications to get an alert in your ebook or audiobook when you meet your daily goal.
Once you set a reading goal, you can see your progress in the top-right corner of Sora (next to the menu).
The circle around the star shows progress towards your goal for the current day. The number next to the star is how many total days you've met your reading goal.
You can change your goal at any time by returning to > Settings > Reading Goals.

Note: Reading goal progress only applies to the daily reading goal you set. Your reading challenge progress is separate.

To see detailed reading goal progress charts, select . From here, you can see:
The total number of days you've met your goal:
Note: Goal days don't have to be consecutive to count toward this total.
Your current milestone location:
You'll earn milestones for meeting your daily reading goal.
Progress toward the next milestone location:
Reading chart:
See your daily reading time compared to your reading goal for the past week, month, or six months. Hover over a day to see your exact reading time.
Goal calendar:
See which days you met your reading goal. The days you met your goal are marked with a star.
You can disable the calendars and graphs if you don't want to see them:
Select .
Under "Settings," select Reading Goals.
Turn reading goal Charts off.
You can earn achievements, reading goal milestones, and reading challenge badges in Sora.
Achievements
Lots of different actions earn achievements, like making a highlight, finishing a book, or returning a book early.
To see your achievements, select . You'll also see achievements you don't have yet (and how to earn them).
Milestones are earned when you meet your daily reading goal. Each day you meet your goal, you'll get closer to the next milestone.
To see your reading goal progress, including your current milestone, select in the top-right corner of Sora (next to the menu). You'll also see how many times you need to meet your goal to earn the next milestone.
To see your previous milestones, select .
Badges are earned when you complete a reading challenge. You can join reading challenges created by teachers or friends, or create your own challenge.
To see your badges, select . From here, you'll also be able to see your reading challenge progress.
Accessibility
Dyslexic font is designed to make text easier to read for users with dyslexia. You can enable dyslexic font for the entire Sora app/website or in individual ebooks.
Note: The dyslexic font display option isn't available in all languages or for all ebooks.
Click or tap .
Turn on Dyslexic font (under "Settings").
When you enable dyslexic font for Sora, the dyslexic font setting is automatically applied to ebooks you open.
If you decide not to turn on dyslexic font for the entire Sora app/website, you can still turn it on for individual ebooks.
Go to > Loans and open an ebook.
Select .
Note: On smaller screens, tap the center of the screen to see this option.
Under "Book design," select OpenDyslexic.
High contrast mode is designed to make colors easier to distinguish for users with visual impairments. You can enable high contrast mode for the entire Sora app/website or in individual ebooks.
Note: Some ebooks don't have the high contrast display option.
Click or tap .
Turn on High contrast mode (under "Settings").
When you enable high contrast mode for Sora, the high contrast setting is automatically applied to ebooks you open.
If you decide not to turn on high contrast mode for the entire Sora app/website, you can still turn it on for individual ebooks.
Go to > Loans and open an ebook.
Select .
Note: On smaller screens, tap the center of the screen to see this option.
Under "Lighting," select High contrast.
If you use Sora with a screen reader, you can enter "Read From Here" mode after you open an ebook to hear it read aloud. For sighted users, we recommend using Read to Me in ebooks (to read individual paragraphs aloud) or listening to audiobooks instead.
Note: If you're using VoiceOver on iOS, you can use the Magic Tap gesture anywhere in the reader to enter or exit "Read From Here" mode. Otherwise, follow the steps below.
To enter "Read From Here" mode with a keyboard shortcut, press Shift + " when you have an ebook open in Sora.
If you don't have a keyboard or don't want to use the shortcut:
Open a borrowed ebook in Sora.
Dismiss the navigation.
While in "Page" mode, tab or swipe until you hear "Read From Here button," then activate the button.
While in "Read From Here" mode, tab or swipe to read each section (header, paragraph, etc.). Or, follow the prompts to change your screen reader settings to continuously read.
To exit "Read From Here" mode, tab or touch the top-right corner of the screen to access and select the Exit button, or press Esc on your keyboard.
If you're having trouble with Sora (like the app crashing or problems reading books), try one or more of the steps below.
Restart your device.
Sign out of Sora and sign back in.
Make sure you have an internet connection (if you're trying to do anything other than read or listen to a downloaded book).
App only: Make sure you're using the latest version of Sora. Check your app store for updates.
Browser only: Open Sora in a different web browser.
If you're having trouble reading or listening to a book in the app or web browsers that allow downloads:
Go to .
Select Loans.
Click or tap the icon under the title (either or ).
Click or tap the option that's not already selected.
If you switch to Stream (when online), make sure to select Yes, delete download when prompted.
Open the book again.
If you try all these steps and still have trouble, ask a teacher for more help.
