Keyport, NJ is a borough in northern Monmouth County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. A waterfront community located on the Raritan Bay in the Raritan Valley region, the borough is a commuter town of New York City in the New York metropolitan area. As of the 2020 United States census, the borough's population was 7,204, a decrease of 36 (−0.5%) from the 2010 census count of 7,240, which in turn reflected a decline of 328 (−4.3%) from the 7,568 counted in the 2000 census. Keyport's nickname is the "Pearl of the Bayshore" or the "Gateway to the Bayshore".
Keyport was originally formed as a Town on March 17, 1870, from portions of Raritan Township (now Hazlet). On April 2, 1908, the Borough of Keyport was formed, replacing Keyport Town.
Keyport was part of the Bayshore Regional Strategic Plan, an effort by nine municipalities in northern Monmouth County to reinvigorate the area's economy by emphasizing the traditional downtowns, dense residential neighborhoods, maritime history, and the natural Raritan Bayshore coastline. The plan has since been integrated into the 2016 Monmouth County Master Plan. According to the Monmouth County Master Plan, Keyport has been designated as an Arts, Cultural, and Entertainment (ACE) Hub, which is defined as municipalities that have a high concentration of arts and cultural activities to serve as a destination for both visitors and locals, usually including an active nightlife scene in proximity to said cultural activities. Only eight towns in Monmouth County share this designation, with two additional towns designated as upcoming ACE hubs, including nearby Matawan.

The Kearney Mansion’s ownership changed over the years until it was abandoned and left neglected for years. In 1972 a group of Keyport residents formed the Keyport Historical Society after salvaging some items from the Mansion before it was demolished. These salvage artifacts created a need for a location where they could be kept and displayed along with other Keyport artifacts to keep Keyport’s rich history alive.
In 1976 the Steamboat Dock Museum opened. It was located at the foot of Broad Street at American Legion Drive. It was originally owned by the Keansburg Steamboat Company. It was built in 1948 and used as a machine shop, tool storage, sleeping quarters to support steamboat operations before it was left unattended for years. In the mid 70’s the Keyport Historical Society was able to rent the building from Keyport Borough for $1.00 per year. The members of the society toiled to renovate the building including removing dirt and sand that had accumulated inside the building and make it into a place where artifacts could be displayed and admired by the public.
The Burrowes Mansion Museum is a local history museum operated by the Matawan Historical Society. The museum contains period rooms, antiques — including eighteenth and nineteenth century furniture — and local memorabilia. Special mini-displays and exhibits highlighting a collection of historical events are on display from time to time.
The museum is open to the public on the first and third Sundays of the month from March through December from 2 pm to 4 pm. Special tours for groups or school classes are possible by making advance arrangements.
