Why to Examine?
Self-Examination Before the Lord’s Table
Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians 11:27–29 that taking communion is a sacred act, not to be done carelessly or with an unrepentant heart. Anyone who eats the bread or drinks the cup “unworthily” sins against the body and blood of Christ. Therefore, believers are called to examine themselves—to reflect on their hearts, attitudes, and relationships—before partaking. Communion should be taken with reverence, humility, and awareness of Christ’s sacrifice. Failing to do so brings God’s judgment, because it shows dishonor toward the body of Christ and the unity of His church.
What is the motive of our Assessments?
Paul’s Joy at the Church’s Repentance: 2 Corinthians 7:8-13
8 I am not sorry that I sent that severe letter to you, though I was sorry at first, for I know it was painful to you for a little while. 9 Now I am glad I sent it, not because it hurt you, but because the pain caused you to repent and change your ways. It was the kind of sorrow God wants his people to have, so you were not harmed by us in any way. 10 For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.
11 Just see what this godly sorrow produced in you! Such earnestness, such concern to clear yourselves, such indignation, such alarm, such longing to see me, such zeal, and such a readiness to punish wrong. You showed that you have done everything necessary to make things right. 12 My purpose, then, was not to write about who did the wrong or who was wronged. I wrote to you so that in the sight of God you could see for yourselves how loyal you are to us. 13 We have been greatly encouraged by this.
Paul rejoices because the Corinthian church responded to his correction with true repentance, not defensive pride or worldly guilt. His earlier “severe letter” caused temporary pain, but that pain was holy and purposeful—it led them away from sin and toward spiritual growth. This is the kind of sorrow God desires: godly sorrow, which produces repentance, transformation, and ultimately salvation. Unlike worldly sorrow, which only creates shame and spiritual deadness, godly sorrow brings renewal, zeal, and a desire to make things right.
In the same way, the self-examination questions we use today are not meant to condemn or crush us with guilt. For those who are in Christ, there is no condemnation. Instead, the conviction of the Holy Spirit is a loving work that exposes anything that harms our walk with God, so we can turn away from it and live in freedom. We rejoice—not in the pain of correction—but in the fruit it produces: eagerness, sincerity, restored relationships, and a heart that longs to obey God. Godly Sorrow That Leads to Life, Not Condemnation.
Through conviction, repentance, and renewal, God leads us deeper into holiness, stronger in faith, and more alive in Christ. The goal is not shame—it is salvation, joy, and transformation.
This was created to help families grow together in their faith and in the knowledge of Christ. Its purpose is to encourage parents to teach their children and guide their households in the ways of God. By using these teachings and assessments, families who fear God can strengthen their spiritual foundation, nurture Christ-centered lives, and support each individual member in growing deeper in their walk with Christ.

How frequently to Examine?
Spiritual growth is not about finishing assessments quickly; it is about allowing God’s truth to deeply shape the heart and transform life. Real transformation takes time. The work of the Holy Spirit within us is often gradual, and some changes may take years. For example, learning to truly forgive someone who has hurt us is rarely immediate—it can be a long process of healing, prayer, and surrender.
Instead of rushing to complete assessments, the focus should be on meditating on Scripture, allowing it to take root in the heart, and waiting for the guidance, affirmation, and direction of the Holy Spirit. As believers patiently reflect on God’s Word and remain open to His work, genuine transformation slowly unfolds in their character, attitudes, and actions. True spiritual growth is measured not by speed, but by how deeply God’s Word becomes engraved in the heart and lived out in daily life.
