9:00
We will welcome workshop attendees and review the day's agenda and schedule. Prior to the workshop, we will ask attendees to bring examples of participant artifacts (e.g., zines, body maps, cultural probes, diaries) that they have been working with most recently or most frequently. If they are not able to bring physical artifacts to the workshop, attendees can upload a demo video or images of the artifact to a shared Google Drive instead. We require these artifacts or documentation of them to be de-identified beforehand. After giving an overview of the day, we will begin introductions, where organizers will introduce themselves and then ask attendees to address the following prompts:
10:00
The workshop organizers will deliver a presentation covering the workshop's background, motivations, and goals. We will also share our experiences with artifacts and explain our rationale for hosting the workshop. We will reserve time for Q&A with attendees during the presentation.
10:30 Coffee Break (15 min)
10:45
During the first collaborative session, we will ask attendees to create their own artifacts. Attendees will self-assign to small groups (3-4 attendees) based on their interests, alignment, or mentor-seeking opportunities with other attendees’ research and experience. Attendees may either create artifacts they are familiar with in their participatory practices or use new materials or approaches they wish to explore.
12:15 Lunch (90 min)
13:45
Organizers will give a recap to the prior session and explain the next activity.
14:00
We will begin the next collaborative session by asking attendees to reconvene with their small groups from the prior session. We will then pair small groups to exchange artifacts; for example, if groups A and B are paired, group A receives all artifacts created by group B's members, and group B receives all artifacts created by group A's members.
15:30 Coffee Break (15 min)
15:45
Groups will present their work from the collaborative sessions. They will be asked to elaborate on the initial process of creating their artifacts, analyze the artifacts they received, return to the artifacts' creators to “member-check,” and share any key insights or notable impressions from the collaborative sessions. Attendees will be asked to save comments and questions for the following Open Discussion.
16:45
We will move to an open discussion of the presentations and the workshop's final insights. Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss freely with one another, and we will encourage them to engage with people they may not have interacted with as much during the collaborative questions. We will also prompt attendees to reflect on novel insights around the participatory process itself they may have not considered before, especially in contending with the two main workshop themes. We will then bring all attendees back together for any questions or comments they would like to share with everyone. The workshop will conclude with the organizers summarizing their key observations and outlining next steps, including establishing avenues of contact with workshop organizers and attendees for future opportunities to collaborate.
