If you want a heavy, over-ear studio monitor built for isolation and mixing, choose Direct Sound DS-74; if you need ultra-lightweight in-ear monitors with deep bass and a detachable cable for gaming or mobile listening, choose CVJ Mermaid 2.
• Direct Sound DS-74: The standout strength is its closed-back circumaural design offering maximum sound isolation and a massive frequency range from 10Hz to 30KHz, but the trade-off is its significant weight of 1.2 pounds and lack of wireless convenience. This pick is for students who prioritize critical listening and studio-grade monitoring over portability.
• CVJ Mermaid 2: The biggest advantage is its ergonomic aluminum alloy build with passive noise cancellation and a powerful 10mm driver tuned for rich bass, yet it trades off an open frequency response (capped at 20KHz) and requires careful fitment. This pick is for students who need all-day comfort, a secure fit for movement, and high-fidelity audio on the go.
The Direct Sound DS-74 is not designed for walking across campus or commuting; it is built for the dedicated space where sound quality is non-negotiable. As a closed-back circumaural headphone, its primary function is to seal out the world. If you are a college student living in a noisy dorm or sharing a small apartment, the physical design of these headphones does more than just block sound—it isolates it. The large 50mm drivers deliver a frequency response that starts at a deep 10Hz and extends up to 30KHz, which is unusually wide for this price category. This specification means you aren't just hearing music; you are hearing the full spectrum of what was recorded, including the subtlest reverb tails and the lowest rumble of a kick drum.
For the student majoring in audio engineering, music production, or sound design, the DS-74 serves as a reliable reference tool. The closed-back enclosure ensures minimal audio bleed, which is critical when recording vocals or instruments in a home setup. You can play backing tracks loudly without them leaking into your microphone, a problem that plagues open-back designs in untreated rooms. Furthermore, the 1600mW max output power rating suggests these cans can handle high volume levels without distortion, making them suitable for analyzing loud mixes or dynamic live recordings. The construction features plastic and polyurethane materials, providing a durable shell that can withstand the rigors of a busy semester.

However, you should skip this product if your lifestyle involves moving around constantly. At 1.2 pounds, these are substantial pieces of equipment. While the "over-ear" cup shape is comfortable for long sessions, the sheer mass makes them impractical for carrying in a backpack alongside textbooks and laptops. They rely on a wired 3.5mm connection, meaning you will be tethered to your device. If you need headphones for running, biking, or studying in a crowded coffee shop where you might need to quickly pop one ear off, the DS-74 is too cumbersome. It is a stationary tool for focused work, not a companion for a wandering student.
The CVJ Mermaid 2 takes a completely different approach by prioritizing mobility, comfort, and a specific sonic signature tailored for modern listening habits. These are in-ear monitors (IEMs) crafted from lightweight aluminum alloy, weighing only 257 grams total. This weight difference is staggering compared to the DS-74. For a college student who wears headphones for hours while attending lectures, working in libraries, or gaming late at night, the ergonomic loop-over-ear design prevents fatigue. The hollowed-out faceplate and vacuum-plated gold mid-layer are not just aesthetic choices; they contribute to a pressure release vent system that maintains acoustic balance without adding bulk.
The audio tuning here is distinctively bass-centric. Using a passive low-pass network crossover at 1k-2kHz, the Mermaid 2 delivers powerful, textured bass that hits hard without muddying the mids. The mids remain flat from 4k-5kHz, ensuring that vocals and instruments stay clear even when the low end is booming. This makes them exceptional for hi-res true wireless earbuds for college students who listen to a mix of genres, from heavy electronic beats to classical piano. The inclusion of a 10mm dynamic driver with a beryllium crystal diaphragm provides ultra-fast transient response, meaning the sound feels immediate and precise. Whether you are gaming on a console or watching movies on a laptop, the impact of explosions or the crispness of cymbals is rendered with high fidelity.
These earbuds are ideal for anyone who values versatility and connectivity. The package includes a detachable 1016-core silver-plated cable with both 3.5mm and 4.4mm plugs, allowing you to switch between a PC, a Switch, or a phone seamlessly. The tangle-resistant design and secure fit mean you don't have to worry about wires getting caught on things or the buds falling out during a sprint to class. However, the frequency range tops out at 20KHz, which is standard for consumer audio but lower than the DS-74. If you are looking for absolute audiophile-level extension for mastering work, this might feel slightly limited, but for general consumption, gaming, and casual listening, the clarity is outstanding.

If I were a college student today, I would buy the CVJ Mermaid 2. While the Direct Sound DS-74 is an impressive piece of engineering for serious mixing, the reality of student life demands mobility. The Mermaid 2 strikes the perfect balance between high-fidelity audio, specifically its rich bass and clear highs, and the practical need to carry something light enough to wear all day without neck strain. Its ability to connect seamlessly to consoles and phones makes it the most versatile tool for entertainment and study alike. For those who need the best head phones for college students who actually use them outside their bedroom, the Mermaid 2 is the logical choice.
Neither product sheet explicitly lists a built-in microphone, so you cannot assume they have one for calls unless specified by the manufacturer separately. For voice communication, you would likely need a separate headset or a version of the CVJ Mermaid 2 that includes a mic attachment.
The Direct Sound DS-74 relies on physical sound isolation through its closed-back, circumaural design, while the CVJ Mermaid 2 uses passive noise cancellation achieved by the tight seal of the in-ear tips and the internal cavity design. Both require a proper fit to be effective.
At 1.2 pounds, the DS-74 is significantly heavier than typical consumer headphones. It is designed for stationary use like desk monitoring rather than all-day wear or carrying in a bag for long periods.
Yes, the CVJ Mermaid 2 comes with a 3.5mm jack and supports devices like Xbox, PS5, and Switch, making it compatible with most gaming setups without needing extra adapters.
