'NDZ tokoloshe in conversation with teddy bear still life keeps the ball rolling'
PITT Oil based pencil on Fabriano disegno paper 37cm x 48,2cm (c) Dion FutermanArtist statement:
2020 became life with prohibition within a still life and islands of hope and memory. But still, life kept the ball rolling. No walks on the beach. No swimming in the ocean. But still life kept the ball rolling. 2020 became life within a still life island. Isolated dreaming of ladders to the stars, whilst the zebra free to roam, laughed. 2020 became life within a still life. NDZ and the Command Council became god's and dictated and commanded. Tobacco and alcohol was banished in the land and it was written in the commandments ‘Though shall not share thou zol’. The hairy mythological mischievous tokoloshe made himself visible. Tobacco was sourced from the underground market place. The teddy bear climbed down off the mantelpiece, playful as ever, comforting as ever, and held on tightly to the tobacco lest the tokoloshe consume it all. 2020 became life within a still life and the playgrounds and stadiums were devoid of life and team spirit. Still, life kept the ball rolling. The tokoloshe threw the dice and it was decided who should die and who should live. Still life kept the ball rolling. There were no sonic booms of jetliners above the valley. They had been captured, whilst the zebra roamed free. Whilst the dolphins danced and played where man could not venture. Still life kept the ball rolling. There were no mountains to climb no forests to explore. Windows and open doors framed the silent landscape. Inside and outside merged into one mindscape. And the tree in the landscape stood alone unhugged. Still, life kept the ball rolling. The ash was discarded and the remnants of a cigarette kept in a bowl for recycled usage. The game of snakes and ladders became a survival game whilst the snake on the mountain side undisturbed from under its rock, came to visit and play. Still life kept the ball rolling. Time became irrelevant and day and night merged into one. Still, life kept the ball rolling. The tokoloshe sat and smoked his illegal tobacco zol well into the night by candlelight debating the human condition with teddy, whilst a butterfly flapped its wings and somewhere a million miles away, a leaf rustled in that breeze. Whilst still, life kept the ball rolling.
