Legionella are a species of bacteria that grows in water system under favourable conditions - stagnated water with temperature between 20-45 °C.
The bacteria is known to cause Legionellosis, diseases such as:
Pontiac fever - less severe
Lochgoilhead fever - less severe
Legionnaires' disease - most severe
When legionella contaminated water mist / droplets get in human lungs.
Breathing in mist or
Accidentally swallowing water into the lungs
Mist from shower head.
Mist from water tap
All personnel are at risk
However, young children, the elderly and anyone with an underlying health issues (weakened immune systems, and people with chronic respiratory, kidney, or lung diseases) are more vulnerable.
Avoid legionella growth in your water system:
Flush: To prevent water stagnation
Avoid mist: careful not to cause mist when running water during flushing
Brunei - characterised by its high temperature, frequently encounters increased water pipework temperature, which may result in the potential proliferation risk of legionella bacteria.
Hence, personnel must be careful about their individual duties to fight against legionella.
DO Flush every water outlet if not used for more than 2 - 3 days. Ensure not to cause water mist while running any outlet (not to open fully if the pressure is high to prevent the formation of mist.).
Don't Obstruct any water outlet. This will prevent the running of water, which will lead to water stagnation.
Don't Obstruct any water outlet. This will prevent the running of water, which will lead to water stagnation.
Don't Flush the water system / pipework using shower head. This will create mist and the resulting mist can allow legionella bacteria (if present) to be inhaled. Do use tap instead.
At managerial level, there is a Legionella Management Plan under which DIO(Brunei) conduct required actions and checks.
A non-exhaustive list of tasks performed by DIO(Brunei) includes the following:
Scheduled water temperature checks.
Scheduled water residual chlorine level checks.
Scheduled water lab test.
Please try to remain flexible with DIO contractor appointments to help us keep you safe.
