Make sure to consider the height between the table and chairs. If you sit too high, your thighs might hit the underside of the tabletop, which can turn long dinners into a torment. If you sit too low, it becomes uncomfortable to lean your arms against the table, since your shoulders end up in an unnaturally high position.
A good rule of thumb is that the distance between the seat and the kitchen tabletop should be a maximum of 1 foot. Keep in mind that you need to measure from the actual seat. So be extra careful if you have chairs with cushions or built-in padding. These will sink down when you sit on them, and it is from that seating position that you should measure. Otherwise, a few inches in height will disappear when you sit down, and then suddenly: the table is too high.

With the Pedestal Collection, Eero Saarinen vowed to eliminate the "slum of legs" found under chairs and tables with four legs. He worked first with hundreds of drawings, which were followed by scale models. Since the compelling idea was to design chairs that looked good in a room, the model furniture was set up in a scaled model room the size of a doll house.
Born to world famous architect and Cranbrook Academy of Art Director Eliel Saarinen and textile artist Loja Saarinen, Eero Saarinen was surrounded by design his whole life. By the time he was in his teens, Eero was helping his father design furniture and fixtures for the Cranbrook campus. After studying sculpture in Paris and architecture at Yale, Saarinen returned to Cranbrook in 1934.
It was at Cranbrook that Saarinen met Charles Eames. The two young men, both committed to exploring new materials and processes, quickly became great friends and creative collaborators. They worked together on several projects, most notably their groundbreaking collection of molded plywood chairs for 1940 competition Organic Design in Home Furnishings, sponsored by MoMA.
At Cranbrook, Saarinen also met Florence Knoll, who at that time was a promising young protg of Eliel Saarinen. When Florence joined Knoll in the 1940s, she invited Eero to design for the company. Saarinen went on to design many of Knoll's most recognizable pieces, including the Tulip chairs and tables, the Womb chair, and the 70 Series of seating. In addition to these achievements, Saarinen became a leader of the second-generation modernists. For the apron, I sanded the pieces too finely and the gel stain had a hard time sticking, so I had to apply two coats. You can see in the image above how the legs are darker than the apron. Learn from my mistakes and stop sanding at 120-180 grit for pine if you use a gel or oil-based stain. Fortunately, I learned this before I sanded the tabletop!
Which leads me back to the tabletop! After I removed the clamps, it was clear that there were a few high points and ridges along the joints. I used a hand planer to shave them off before sanding the whole surface with rough 80 grit.
