Dina Vardal

Dina Vardal was born and raised in Joliet, Illinois, in a family that blended two rich cultures. Her father was from the Greek island of Mykonos, while her mother came from Ferrara, Italy. Together, they created a home filled with tradition, resilience, and community spirit.

The family also built strong ties in Joliet through business and service. From 1982 to 1989, her mother, Danira, ran Mykonos Gyros, a neighborhood restaurant where locals gathered for meals and connection. Earlier, in 1958, her father and uncle established Vardal Engineering, a business that continues to thrive under family ownership to this day. These ventures shaped Dina’s values of perseverance, hospitality, and service to others.

Education and Lifelong Learning

Public service called Dina at an early age. At just 17, she enlisted in the Army National Guard, beginning her long career of dedication and discipline. At the same time, she pursued her education at Joliet Junior College, earning an Associate in Applied Science degree in Law Enforcement in 1990.

She continued her studies at Western Illinois University, graduating in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in Law Enforcement Administration and a minor in Accounting. A natural leader, she served as President of the Law Enforcement and Justice Administration group and graduated Magna Cum Laude.

Later, while raising a family and working full-time, Dina returned to higher education. In 2007, she earned a Master’s degree in Organizational Development from Benedictine University, showing her deep belief in lifelong growth and leadership.

Career in Law Enforcement

Dina’s law enforcement career spanned more than two decades, during which she held challenging and respected roles. She became a certified SWAT officer, demonstrating courage, strength, and readiness for high-risk situations.

She also worked as a firearms instructor, teaching both officers and civilians in concealed carry and gun safety courses. Another key part of her career was mentoring new police recruits. Dina emphasized not only technical training but also composure, integrity, and responsibility. Her steady presence and commitment made her a trusted figure among peers and trainees alike.

Military Service and Aviation Expertise

In parallel with her police work, Dina Vardal served 22 years in the Army National Guard. Based at Midway Airport with the 106th Aviation Unit, she worked as a helicopter mechanic on multiple aircraft models, including the OH-58, UH-1H, UH-60 Blackhawk, and CH-47 Chinook.

Her dedication earned her greater responsibilities as a crew chief, supervising mechanics and ensuring mission readiness. She also served as her unit’s physical fitness coordinator, guiding soldiers in maintaining health and standards. Beyond her technical and leadership roles, Dina fostered camaraderie by organizing morale events such as military balls and holiday gatherings.

Her service took her abroad to Panama and Germany, experiences that expanded her cultural understanding and allowed her to build friendships with soldiers from across the country and the world.

From Officer to Educator

After retiring from law enforcement and military service, Dina entered a new chapter in education. She became a substitute teacher for the New Lenox School District, working with children from grades 1 through 8.

In the classroom, Dina carried her sense of structure, patience, and encouragement. Teaching gave her a new way to serve, this time by mentoring young students and inspiring them to learn and grow.

Passions and Lifestyle

Beyond her career, Dina enjoys activities that connect her to her heritage and bring her joy. She travels often, especially to Greece, where she renews her ties to family traditions and finds peace in its landscapes. She also enjoys scuba diving, embracing adventure and exploration.

At home, she finds relaxation in gardening, tending to flowers, vegetables, and plants. Cooking is another passion—family and friends will love her Greek meals and homemade cookies.

During her college years, Dina also played tennis at both Joliet Junior College and Western Illinois University. The sport gave her focus, fitness, and lifelong memories. She was featured in her school newspaper and took part in campus life, reflecting her active and determined spirit.

Community Service and Giving Back

A spirit of service has always guided Dina’s life. She has volunteered with Meals on Wheels, providing food and companionship to those in need. She has supported her local food bank, assisted at the NAWS animal shelter, and participated in parish activities at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church.

Whether through significant commitments or everyday acts of kindness, Dina has consistently shown her dedication to helping others.

Family: Her Greatest Joy

Among her many accomplishments, Dina values her family most. In 2022, she married Noe DeLeon Jr. at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Joliet, celebrating their union with love, tradition, and faith.

Her daughter, Danira, born in 2013, is the heart of her life. Dina Vardal describes motherhood as her greatest blessing and the most rewarding role she has ever held. She often says that Danira is the best thing that has ever happened to her.
