The Dig the Castle project is undertaken by and for the people of Great Torrington in collaboration with community interest groups and the non-profit Archaeologists Engage international charity (including staff/honorary staff at the University of Bristol). 

The project centres around the ‘lost’ Norman motte and bailey castle in Great Torrington, which lay unrecognised in plain sight, its legacy only surviving in the fossilised etymology of ‘Castle Street’. This under-valued archaeological site is now a significant lever in a heritage regeneration strategy for the town.
