DHL recently tested an augmented reality system in a warehouse belonging to Ricoh, the Japanese imaging and electronics company, in the Netherlands. Equipped with smart glasses loaded with software from Ubimax, workers followed optimized routes through the warehouse by means of graphics displayed in the glasses, thus greatly streamlining the quest for just the right quantity of the right item, and shortened training time. Within the three-week test period, 10 order pickers were able to finish 9,000 individual orders by picking over 20,000 items. Due to associated productivity improvements and reductions in errors, the overall picking efficiency was raised by 25 percent.
