This free one-day conference on Sunday June 16 will explore the concepts behind the Digital Technologies strand of the K-6 Science & Technology syllabus and will connect educators working within the each stage. Primary teachers from all sectors (Public, Catholic & Independent) as well as pre-service teachers are welcome to attend. This conference will be held at Emanuel School in Randwick, Sydney.

Following the conference, a cross-sector network will be established to provide ongoing support for classroom practitioners as they continue to embed Digital Technologies into their programs.

Program Overview

9 - 10am: James Curran from the Australian Computing Academy will unpack the concepts behind Digital Technologies in the NSW Technologies syllabuses and the Australian Curriculum: Digital Systems, Data Representation, Data Collection and Data Interpretation, Specification, Algorithms and Implementation, Interactions, Impact. This talk will explain the 10 key concepts with practical examples of how they can be taught in the classroom.

10 - 4pm: STEM | STEAM | CODING | DESIGN | MAKING | PBL with Gary Stager. Following an inspiring keynote on New Opportunities for Physical Computing, this workshop will introduce remarkable new technologies that may be used today to amplify the potential of each learner and expand the breadth, depth, and range of projects possible. The day will feature programming activities, hands-on experience with the low-cost BBC micro:bit, and a creative engineering challenge using the new Hummingbird Bit robotics kit.

Learn how Scratch 3.0, BBC micro:bits, the new Hummingbird Bit robotics kit, Circuit Playground Express, Microsoft Makecode, microblocks, and other emerging technology can supercharge project-based learning across the curriculum. Not only is it unprecedented for as much computational power to be accessible to children and usable in a playful creative fashion, but the low cost of these materials democratise powerful learning opportunities. These technologies and related constructive materials create great opportunities to bring progressive education ideals to life in any school. They also provide a fertile context for learning coding, engineering, and physical computing. During the workshop, we will also discuss how to supercharge project-based learning across the curriculum.

4 - 5pm: TeachMeet. Network with other educators working in the same stage, sharing pictures and puzzles of practice. Teachers will share practical ideas of how they are embedding DigiTech concepts and content into their programs.

Morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and barista coffee will be provided. Please bring your reusable coffee cup and water bottle.

Please register your interest in attending or presenting at this event

We are seeking EOIs from teachers who would like to share how they are embedding Digital Technologies in their programs. This will be a session focused on pictures and puzzles of practice.
