Pthalo is a mushroom child who has never learned about anything outside of its home -the forest- but when a few people come to camp in the forest the mushroom child gets curious about a life outside this calm environment and sets its goal to venture out meeting quite some obstacles on the way.
The idea stems from the moon being adored for many centuries and being part of legends, mythology and stories.Â
The moon has something soothing. Earth being the only planet with just one moon, while other planets have several, which are important for their climate and rhythm; as do they protect their planets from meteors and other external things in the universe which could be harmful.
Which brings me to the question: what if the moon would be gone; reborn as a normal breathing human being? Would earth spiral out of control? How long could earth pull through without the moon?
A young boy that has always felt out of drift but made his peace with the fact that people can be different and there is nothing bad about it. Grow up, be part of society and then die; be there and then be gone.
The moon is said to have gotten its name by the the Greeks called "Selene" and the Romans called "Luna", which gave me the idea to pace the story in Greece, but rather modern Greece, as the story is supposed to have some apocalyptical element to it.
For this I looked at which animals had been sent to space to explore and what species of them exist in Greece, which is where the story would take place.
For housing I got the inspiration of old Greek buildings, which still exist until this day, big enough to have several families be able to live there together. Greece is surrounded by water and their weather is rather warm which has to be taken into consideration when you design a building that has to be spacious to let air easy flow through.
It is a rather dry area so there are a large amount of hedges and spaced out greenery, the typical beige earth shining through.
Greece is a very colorful but also muted country when you speak in terms of color. The water shines in magnificent colors, as do the flowers but the dry land otherwise has nothing more to offer. It is warm so that not too many plants can survive there without proper care.
The idea stems from the night and day moving in full harmony with each other and bleeding into each other, but never fully meeting.
Night and day need each other but they cannot be at the same place at the same time.
The contrast between night and day, dark and bright, calm and fiery. But what if you put a spin on it. Give different attributes to them, Change their whole being; make the timid one bright and the calm one shine so fully.
What if the night is spontaneous and witty, making the more collected and orderly day get a bit more comfortable when some things do not go to plan?
They have shown that they can perfectly well work in a cycle, but maybe there is even more to that.
Night and day grow up beside each other but never with each other. It is more like they watch each other grow up from the sidelines until the night wants to get to know the day more; wants to know how they handle everything, what they like and who they want to be.Â
The night is beautiful as the stars and the moon shine brightly. A young, bright woman who likes to have some fun and paints the night sky daily to what she feels like.
What is the day like? It depends on the season and the weather. The day can be blindingly bright, but also gray as the clouds cast themselves in front of the sky. Due to the season in regulated climate you can often tell what type of weather to expect and what type of day you will most likely have.
That does not mean that the night does not have theses things, just that you can more easily see and identify things.
Through weather forecasts you can nowadays tell what the day will be like, so I thought of the day as some very well organized young, white collared man, who is orderly. A proper person who sees everything going to plan as the highest achievement.
The idea of this short film is that, the satisfaction of helping and giving a piece of yourself away, might end up hurting you so far, that you might lose trust in people. Only when someone comes along that helps you to heal again without wanting anything in return, the trust in people and beauty of the world can be restored.
