Digital Pathology Market Growth Opportunities, Revenue Trends, and Share Forecast 2034
The Digital pathology market growth in 2026 involves converting traditional glass slides into digital images using whole-slide scanners or digital microscopy systems. These images can be viewed, analyzed, stored, and shared through specialized software platforms. The technology supports disease diagnosis, drug discovery, and pathology research by enabling specialists to review tissue samples digitally. Integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and image-analysis tools is also expanding the capabilities of digital pathology systems, creating opportunities for more efficient image assessment and laboratory workflow management.
According to Fortune Business Insights, the global digital pathology market size was valued at USD 1.3 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow from USD 1.47 billion in 2026 to USD 5.75 billion by 2034, exhibiting a CAGR of 18.56% during the forecast period. North America dominated the market with a share of 36.74% in 2025. The growing adoption of digital technologies in diagnostic laboratories, hospitals, and research institutions is transforming traditional pathology workflows. Healthcare providers are increasingly using digital tools to capture, store, analyze, and share tissue images, supporting remote consultations and more coordinated diagnostic processes.

Increasing Demand for Advanced Diagnostic Workflows: The rising burden of chronic disorders and the growing number of diagnostic tests are supporting the adoption of digital pathology solutions. Pathology laboratories are managing increasing workloads and require technologies that help organize image review, facilitate specialist consultations, and improve access to diagnostic information. Whole-slide imaging enables pathologists to examine digital tissue samples remotely, supporting collaboration among specialists and healthcare facilities.
Growing Integration of Artificial Intelligence: AI and machine learning are becoming important components of digital pathology platforms. Image-analysis algorithms can support tasks such as cell detection, tissue classification, biomarker assessment, and quantification of specific features. These technologies can assist pathologists with selected image-review activities and help manage complex diagnostic workflows. In December 2021, F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd. launched three AI-based digital pathology algorithms for deep-learning image analysis to assist with the evaluation of breast cancer markers, including Ki-67, ER, and PR.
High Initial Implementation Costs: The high cost of scanners, software, storage infrastructure, and staff training remains a major challenge for market adoption. Laboratories must also consider maintenance, technical support, system integration, and regulatory requirements. These expenses can limit adoption among small and mid-sized facilities with restricted budgets. The need to maintain large digital image repositories further increases infrastructure and operating requirements.
Opportunities in Pharmaceutical Research: Digital pathology offers opportunities in drug discovery, toxicologic pathology, and biomarker research. Pharmaceutical companies and research organizations can use digital images to support tissue assessment and collaboration across research teams. The development of AI-enabled image-analysis platforms and secure digital image-sharing systems is expected to create additional opportunities for technology providers.
The digital pathology market includes companies offering slide scanners, imaging software, image-analysis platforms, and integrated pathology solutions. Competition is influenced by technological capabilities, image quality, workflow integration, product reliability, and the ability to support large digital image repositories. Companies are investing in research and development to introduce advanced imaging and AI-enabled solutions that address the requirements of diagnostic laboratories and research institutions.
Strategic partnerships and product launches are also shaping the competitive environment. In January 2022, Aiforia announced a collaboration with Mayo Clinic to establish an AI-powered pathology research center. The collaboration focused on using digital platforms and deep learning to support pathology research and translational studies. Such initiatives demonstrate the growing importance of collaboration between technology developers and healthcare research institutions.
