Essential Question - How and why do we need to scaffold students' close reading, especially when it comes to digital texts?
Give your group members a 60 second summary of your article, pointing to the key items that you annotated, as well as the questions and problems the article raised for you.
Consider all the ideas shared from the four articles. What are the most significant takeaways from the readings for you?
A. Post your takeaways to the Padlet using DIFFERENT posts for each idea.
B. Comment on someone else's takeaway by responding or drawing a connection.
1. Did you read from beginning to end?
2. When did you decide to highlight, annotate, or comment?
3. Did using the annotation tool improve your comprehension of and engagement with the article? How?
3. What was your self-monitoring like?
4. What was challenging about the experience?
The Bottom Line
"According to the cognitive perspective, text comprehension depends on the interaction between the structure of the text and the cognitive abilities of the reader. The structural differences between print and digital formats have a dramatic effect on readers' ability to self regulate learning and effectively employ monitoring strategies, which influence their level of comprehension (e.g. Ackerman & Goldsmith, 2011; Rouet, 2000). According to this perspective, our finding, that annotation did not influence comprehension in the digital condition could be explained, at least partially, by the high cognitive load that results from the structure of a digital text."
