Harvey Russell was born on December 4, 1895 in Fredonia, Texas. This was the beginning of a leader's journey.
The Battle of Saint-Mihiel:
Back in 1918, when WWI was taking place, Harvey served as a medic in his platoon. They were one of the American regiments who participated in the Battle of Saint-Mihiel. Here, Harvey had a near-death experience and dedicated the rest of his life to helping children.
Time at Howard Payne:
From 1919 to 1921, Harvey played as the captain of the basketball and football teams at Howard Payne University. He also starred on the track team. Harvey then brought his athletic talents and reputation to the coaching world.
Starting at Fort Worth:
Harvey started the football program at the Fort Worth Masonic Home and School in 1927. With his time at the orphanage, Harvey faced many challenges, but he still managed to raise a successful team of orphans.
Class A State Semifinals:
The first time the Fort Worth team and Harvey Russell reached the class A state semifinals was in 1934. They battled many stronger teams for this opportunity, but unfortunately, they were unsuccessful.
Departure from Fort Worth:
1941, the year that Harvey left the Fort Worth Masonic Home and School. This was during the early years of WW2 as well.
Harvey Russell's Passing:
On January 8, 1980, Harvey Nual Russell passed away from heart failure. A sad ending to his story, but he will always be remembered for his leadership and phenomenal accomplishments.
