Turku Åbo Summer School

Social Change in a Digital Age

ABOUT

This page was created as a part of group research on the course
"Social Change in a Digital Age" (Turku Åbo Summer School).

The course aimed to give insights into the interrelations between
the use of digital media and social change as well as to provide students with the tools needed to research and facilitate online publications.

Digital media has revolutionized how we communicate, organize, and act
in society. Digitalization and its impact on different parts of social life
is the starting point for this course in media sociology.
The new technological possibilities are fertile ground for social actions,
movements, and innovations that have far-reaching consequences
for all of humanity.

Digital activism and social movements with an example of the climactivist group Extinction Rebellion

Digital media have revolutionized the way we communicate, organize and act in society. In this essay, I want to look at a very important and formative environmental movement, Extinction Rebellion, and how it can use social media to its advantage for climate activism. Before that, I will go over the concepts of digital activism, social movements, and the influence of social networks on social movements and explain them in detail. I then link this to theories that were also partially presented in our course.
