Has anyone else given the Berlin Philharmonic streaming music service a try? With an educator discount the charge for the entire season is about $140. This is one of the services available through Sony (i.e. unfortunately its not available through your Roku or similar device). However you can use a mac or a pc and if you can get the audio/video into the devices/system of your choosing you can forego the purchase of a Sony dvd player or television. Of course if you happen to have a nice large Sony flatscreen you already have access. With my Sharp flatscreen once I decided I really wanted to give it a try it was easier to purchase a cheap Sony dvd player and attached it as a device via ethernet to my router. I have the coax digital audio stream out of the dvd player being decoded by my Bryston DAC-1, with the video over HDMI. The service streams AAC-encoded audio at 320kbps with 1080p video streamed at multiple megabytes per second on its "high" bandwidth setting. The system runs a brief test prior to streaming any content which will determine whether its reads your web connection capable of low, medium or high bandwidth. With the season pass you can listen to each concert live (albeit with the time difference that puts the concert at 2PM on the east coast). The real benefit of a subscription is having access to all the orchestra's master season concerts since the beginning of the Digital Concert Hall project which takes you back to 2008 so you have access to a total of nearly 100 Berlin Philharmonic concerts.

OK, well about the sound. It sounds a bit digital and overmiked but not harsh or strident in any way and instruments' timbre/textures sound accurate to me. I recently subscribed and am thoroughly enjoying watching and listening to this wonderful orchestra! Many concerts are broadcast live, and are available in edited format a few days after the concert. Each of the concerts are very well bookmarked, so that you can select only certain numbers or listen to the whole concert front to back, and interviews with featured performers, conductors, etc., are informative. HD video quality on my new Panasonic plasma (ZT60) is superb and audio via the ARC into my AVR is wonderful, as well.

Boston Symphony has a very good engineering team as well. Location recording/broadcast is a speciality and not all recording engineers are good at getting it right. The Internet allows me to listen to a lot of live and "transcribed" broadcasts and unfortunately, most of them don't sound very good. For instance, the people who engineer the Seattle Symphony broadcasts for KING FM don't do it very well. But The Boston Symphony/Pops concerts from WCRB sound excellent. The BBC does a great job as well (they ought to be able to do that, they've been at it long enough). We live in a wonderful age, technologically. The Internet allows us to hear great music, live, from around the world in good stereo. Sure, it's digitally compressed, and there can be audio artifacts, but compare a well produced live (or recorded) concert from the likes of WCRB in Boston with most FM outlets. I say that multi-path, volume compression, and hard-limiting on FM produce far more objectionable "artifacts" than those of MP3.

The Digital Concert Hall is the virtual concert venue of the Berliner Philharmoniker on the Internet. Here you can experience the orchestra performing live at the Philharmonie in Berlin in more than 30 broadcasts every year. Just a few days after each broadcast, a recording of the concert is then available to watch in the archive. Also includes music-related documentaries and interviews.

Around 40 Berlin Philharmonic concerts per year are transmitted by the Digital Concert Hall from the Berlin Philharmonie and can be streamed live in high-definition video and excellent audio quality. In addition, after a few days' post-processing, the concerts can be accessed in the concert archive of the Digital Concert Hall. The comprehensive archive consists of recent concerts, mostly directed by Sir Simon Rattle, but also older performances such as 1990s concerts with Claudio Abbado. The documentaries, Education contributions or interviews are usually free of charge, whereas the Philharmonic concerts must be paid for.
