Taking Perspectives on Cyberbullying

How does online cruelty affect the people involved?

This video uses some language (slut, whore, etc) that might be offensive for younger viewers. Be sure to preview before deciding to use with your class.

Assign roles to groups (this link):

  • Groups of students will take the perspective of one of the characters. They should determine what role their character plays in the situation:

target, offender, bystander, or upstander

  • Then use the character quotation and the questions as a guide to help you understand your character’s perspective. As a team, write an answer for each question.

Once you've watched the video clips, give groups time to discuss the role their character played, and to answer the questions about their character.

Have each group report out.

Debrief:

  • What should you think about before you post anything about another person online, in an instant message, text, or any other kind of digital message?
  • Someone posts a picture of your friend with some nasty comments, and other kids make fun of him or her. What would a bystander do in this situation? What would an upstander do? What would you do?
