I'm a clarinet player. My principal interest is in classical music, from the very beginning to the contemporary authors, but I also like to listen to many times of instrumental music, from traditional pieces of various countries to jazz. I also wrote a few pieces, which you can find below. Finally, I contributed to an Italian book on how to play clarinet by providing a description of the clarinet acoustics (you can find the book here and the full version of the acoustics chapter here).
After obtaining the third prize at the 1990 international music competition in Genova (Italy), at age 18 I achieved the highest clarinet degree in 1991 under the guidance of Graziano Gerboni. Next, I was awarded the first prize in the 1991 young musician competition in Ravenna (Italy) and then for two years I enjoyed further training by Italo Capicchioni, who has been the first clarinet of the "Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala" in Milan for many years. However, I soon realized that there was little chance for me to become a professional musician at that time, at least in Italy, so I decided to study Physics. While moving across few countries for my work as a physicist, I played music in a wide variety of ensembles, from chamber music to orchestral compositions, and different styles, from popular music to band pieces, from jazz to classical masterpieces.
The first video showing me playing in public dates back to 1991, just before I passed the final examination to get my (master equivalent) degree in clarinet. The programme was the Clarinet Concert no.2 by Carl Maria von Weber (in the arrangement for clarinet and piano) and the five Dance Preludes from Witold Lutoslawski. Unfortunately, the tape quality (and the operator ability...) are not at the best level, but one can still appreciate most of the programme.
The second video was taken by a better operator (my father) but the audio compression algorithm of the camera still flattens a lot the dynamics. It also dates back to 1991, after I got my final degree, and was taken at the concert for the winners of the music competition in Ravenna. The programme was the Capriccio for Solo Clarinet by Heinrich Sutermeister and the Three Pieces by Igor Stravinsky (everything executed with a B-b clarinet, as I could purchase my A clarinet only 9 years later). A better interpretation of the latter is offered below :-)
