Course Description:
This course provides an upper level understanding of the art and archeology associated with the culture of ancient Rome beginning c. 1000 BCE and ending in the 1st C. CE with The Flavians. We will follow Rome’s earliest beginnings in Etruscan Iron Age artifacts through the establishment of the Empire, Roman Imperialism, the impact of Christianity, and the continuing relevance of Roman institutions in modern society. Throughout this course, students will examine how art defines our understanding of the Roman culture within and beyond the Seven Hills of the ancient city.
