ABOUT US

Diasporakidz is a collective of four interdisciplinary artists on a multi-year journey of ancestral inquiry. In 2019, actor and activist Benita Bailey assembled a group of cross-Canadian artists to participate in Diane Roberts' Arrivals Legacy Project workshop. This profound process served as a critical point of entry into a life-altering and decolonized artistic framework for collaboration, and as such, Diasporakidz was born.

Each member of the collective comes from a different artistic (music, dance, voice, acting, puppetry, visual art, dramaturgy & directing) and cultural background. Our research has unveiled a deep journey of decolonizing the creative process with deep self, group and ancestral listening. We examine critical questions of accountability of our actions and impact and those of our ancestors, and invest in protocols that prioritize process and practice-as-product.

Diasporakidz has received generous financial support from the Canada Council for the Arts, Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and Montréal arts interculturels, and pursued research residencies at LEÑA, Playwrights Workshop Montreal, Goethe Institut Toronto, and an upcoming early reading at Prismatic Arts Festival. This rich body of research will be transformed for the creation of our inaugural piece, NO ONE KNOWS YET. A world premiere will take place in 2024/25 in Toronto, Montréal, Berlin and Vancouver.
