One of the most stressful parts of traveling with your little one is figuring out what to bring in your diaper bag on a plane. You want to pack everything you need, while keeping it light enough to be manageable and easy to carry through the airport and onto the plane without being weighed down or too bulky. ere are some of our favorite things to pack in your diaper bags for airplane rides, along with tips on how to keep your diaper bag as organized as possible!
It is always better to use your own bag rather than the diaper bag that comes with the plane. You can pack more of what you need and get past security quicker with just one or two bags rather than waiting at baggage claim. Here are some items to bring on board when traveling with your baby:
Changing pad – you never know when you might need this; I also like having a foldable blanket as they can also double as a changing pad if needed
Extra clothes, diapers, wipes
Hand sanitizer
Toys
Boogie wipe
Notebook and pen
Snacks for yourself
A variety of nutritious snacks for both the toddler and parents. Consider healthy options like fruit, pretzels, or oatmeal.
Travel sized wipes and diaper changes (including flushable wipes).
Inhaler if you have one.
Change of clothes in case of accidents, spit-ups, etc.
Moistened toilet paper (I also bring along disposable wipes if we are taking a car ride home after the plane ride).
Snacks/drinks for grown-ups if they will be sitting next to the child on the plane.
If it's daytime when we are flying, I try not to pack any milk or water since they are typically available on the flight.
Depending on the length of your flight, you may want to pack an extra set of clothes and diapers just in case.
If your little one is formula fed, be sure that you also have a bottle ready so there is no need to disturb them when they are asleep.
Wipes are an important thing to include since having one hand holding their carry-on luggage and another hand holding the car seat will make it more difficult.
A pillow will also come in handy if you need some relief while they nap while waiting at the airport terminal or gate.
Pack what you think you will need and don't forget your entertainment. A good book, travel size games, music, and coloring book can be great ways to keep children occupied.
Bring snacks or buy on the plane. Think about bringing wet wipes if you have toddlers who need putty training, or diapers and baby clothes if your child doesn't wear a diaper at night but needs one during the day.
What you bring with you on the plane depends on your baby's age and how much time you're going to be spending on the plane.
If your baby is small enough and is likely to sleep most of the time, bring just your diaper bag.
If they are under three months old and it's only an hour or two flight, pack: diapers (if available), pacifier, bottle or sippy cup with nipple in place, few cloth wipes, burp cloth or hand towel that can be wrapped around them as they eat/drink.
-Bring something that can keep your baby happy when you are away from home. Your baby will be content with a pacifier, as long as they have it while they're still getting used to being without their mama.
-Make sure there's plenty of diapers, wipes, and change of clothes. You may get peed on or have an explosive poop blowout so make sure you have some old outfits on hand too.
-Just bring one carrier and stick with the one! Too many carriers can be confusing and difficult when you're traveling.
You should also leave room in your bag so that you can carry other people's things too. What can I bring in my diaper bag for a plane ride?
First, you will need something soft and clean that your baby can lie on while they are waiting to be served.
Some people bring their own changing mat, but this is not necessary if you just want something temporary and clean. Something that is easy to fold up or roll up would work best.
There are many options at stores near airports, as well as other places like Target and Walmart where these mats can also be found.
Second, it is also important to have plenty of diapers and wipes on hand. Parents have been known to run out of diapers during flights with no stores available nearby so it's best not take any chances!
One thing you can never forget on a plane is your clothes. Whether they get wet or dirty, there are always moments where you find yourself needing to change your clothes.
It may not be the ideal time because you have multiple people trying to pull out a seat and someone else is taking off their shoes in the cramped space.
Make it easy on yourself by being prepared with waterproof clothing that can take anything that might happen!
Bringing your baby blanket or poncho will make flying with an infant so much easier. For those times when your little one inevitably decides that they are thirsty or hungry, it is important to bring along enough bottles and snacks to last the duration of the flight.
You should also have everything you need such as toys, diapers, wipes, and hand sanitizer. Pack a sippy cup if your child drinks from a straw - this will eliminate the risk of spilling their drink all over themselves during takeoff and landing.
Finally, it is always good to pack an umbrella cover for easy breastfeeding access in public.
The cover can be pulled up to provide privacy as well as protection from germ exposure during cold months or inclement weather conditions.
What can I bring in my diaper bag? Medications- It's important to pack medications that have been prescribed by your doctor including antibiotics, acetaminophen, ibuprofen and antihistamines.
Sometimes baby may feel under the weather while flying or experience motion sickness. Be sure to pack any prescriptions you might need (such as vitamins) if you are carrying on your liquids.
Car keys- Whether you're traveling by car or plane, be sure to include any car keys, remote fobs and spare keys that you may need during your travel time.
Cash- Make sure you carry enough cash so that you're able not only make purchases while traveling but also buy snacks and food while at the airport.
