This semester I was introduced to contract grading and I have to say I absolutely loved it! No class had ever given me the opportunity to really learn from my mistakes and revise my work. Getting the chance to resubmit my assignments and have more control over my grade by revising my work removed the stress of always having to be perfect and get it right the first time. Nothing will be perfect the first time and that's just part of the learning process and I was so happy to learn that this semester. Being able to receive feedback on every assignment and support when I got stuck was extremely helpful and was my favorite part about the contract grading system.
On this page I have broken down the components of our grading contract for the semester and explained how I addressed each requirement to the best of my ability as my defense to why I am deserving of a "B" in the course.
Attendance
The first step in achieving any goal is to show up, and that is exactly what I did this semester. Even when I began struggling with the coursework, I made sure to show up to class on time every day this semester to participate in any activities, engage in discussion, and ask questions.
Participation & Focus
Not only did I attend every class, but I came prepared to engage in conversation regarding the readings and assignments. I made sure to add my input during class discussions and listen to what others in the class had to say as well . I made sure to be respectful to them and the instructor by giving them my full attention and focusing on class discussions and activities. I committed my attention to every class session.
Peer Review Workshops
The peer review workshops we participated in throughout the semester were extremely helpful since I got feedback from an unbiased reader which made the revision process easier. Personally, they also helped me learn how to provide constructive feedback- a skill that I would apply to my own work with some practice. Knowing this, I made sure to give clear, constructive feedback that my peers could use to improve their paper. I was thorough with my feedback and worked to receive full points on each workshop.
Journals & Assignments
When it comes to the journals and required assignments we were assigned throughout the course, I will admit that I did not complete all of them. Unfortunately, I did encounter a bump in the road during the last few weeks of the semester and struggled to submit all my assignments. Despite this, I did my best to catch up on assignments when I was able to and completed most of the assignments I was behind on. While I recognize the importance of completing these assignments, these struggles were not reflective of the progress I made in the class and the effort I put in for the rest of the semester. From the first assignment I made sure to put in my best effort and do my best work on every annotation practice, journal, and essay. If I did not receive a complete score, I made sure to meet for office hours, revise my work, and resubmit it until I recieved full points.
