Diamonds in the rough

Heather MacKenzie

Heather MacKenzie, Rio Tinto

Born and raised in Yellowknife, NT, Heather has been Employed at Diavik for 6 years as an Instrumentation Technician.

Heather has three years experience on mine rescue and competed in four competitions (one as a spare and three as gas man). She is also certified as a level 2 Drager tech and has competed as such in all four competitions. Heather is also a certified First Responder.

In her spare time, Heather spends time with her canine friend Lily and also works a second job as a systems technician for access control.

Why is this important to Heather?

“It’s going to be a lot of fun first of all. Secondly, we want to encourage more women to participate in these emergency response and mine rescue roles. Participating on an international platform will help elevate the awareness of women’s potential in non-traditional gender roles.”
