As a small group with a highly specialized skill set, we found it challenging to find a suitable organization to join. Our primary goal is to provide exceptional service to our students, and to achieve this, we need to connect with our peers. Unfortunately, as DHH, BVI itinerant, or AVT professionals, we often work in isolation, with little opportunity to network with colleagues in our field. This is where an SIC comes in - it provides a platform for us to connect with like-minded professionals across the province.
In addition to networking, we also wanted to participate in professional development that was tailored to our unique roles. We believe that staying up-to-date with the latest technologies and teaching techniques is essential to providing the best possible service to our students. By participating in PL that is specific to our field, we feel inspired and motivated to continue growing and improving.
Finally, we recognize that our field is often overlooked and misunderstood. We want to raise awareness of the vital services we provide and how schools can access them. By increasing visibility, we hope to generate more interest in our field and encourage more teachers to train to become Itinerant Teachers for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Classroom Teachers for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Teachers for the Blind and Visually Impaired, or Auditory Verbal Therapists.
In summary, our small but dedicated group is committed to providing exceptional service to our students. By joining an SIC, we can connect with our peers, participate in relevant professional development, and raise awareness of our field. We believe that by working together, we can make a significant impact on the lives of our students and their families.
