Extension Agenda
AY 2023-2024 to AY 2028-2029
The Home Economics Education Department, through its extension activities and programs, aims to contribute to a "stronger, empowered individuals and families (1)." Its extension agenda focus on the home economics four integrative areas of study. It also addresses the following UN Sustainable Development Goals:
HE Education and Training
Teaching of home economics knowledge and skills to students, and home economics practitioners and educators
Consumer Studies and Education
Upgrading of consumers' skills related to decision-making, sustainable consumption, and use of alternative sources
Household Resource Management
Assistance on effective management and use of family and household resources for improved daily living
Entrepreneurship and Livelihood Education
Maximizing capabilities of families and households in managing small scale family businesses

Extension Activities of the Department
Curriculum Review
Review of the EPP 4 and TLE 7 MATATAG Curriculum of DepEd
Dr. Chua and Asst. Prof. Trinidad reviewed the Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan 4 and the Technology and Livelihood Education 7 of the MATATAG Curriculum. Dr. Bantang also developed test items for the assessment of the curricula’s pilot implementation. Their involvement with the Department of Education's project started in March and ended in June 2024.
Finalization of the Rural Farm School Curriculum Guides Aligned to the MATATAG Curriculum

HE Art Contest
The DHEEd organized an HE Art Contest last February to March 2024 in celebration of the World Home Economics Day 2024, with the theme “Home Economics 3.0: A Critical Update.” The art entries focused on the crucial role home economists play in shaping individuals, families and the societies' future and focusing on how they can ensure that homes, families, and consumers remain safe, happy, and healthy in a rapidly changing world.

Home Economics Teachers' Skills Enhancement Training: Empowering Home Economics Teachers Through Research and Skills Development
A training of Home Economics home economics (HE) teachers from public schools and partner institutions was conducted last March 29, 2025 at the UP Child Development Center Auditorium in UP Diliman. It aimed to enhance the HE teachers’ proficiency in research methods, research topics, and introduce the ethical and responsible use of the Internet and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
In general, the training program was a success and made a positive impact on their profession as all teachers stated that the training made a positive impact on their respective professions. Through this one-day training program, the education sector would benefit from having better equipped home economics (HE) teachers who will teach research skills needed to attain educational credibility in this discipline. This training program also fulfills the University’s mandate of public service (RA 9500 Section 3.d.).
Training of Home Economics Public School Teachers
The training held via Zoom on July 14-16, 2021, aimed to enhance the competencies of public school teachers in home economics from the Department's partner practicum schools which are basic education public schools. The focus was on improving their knowledge, skills, and values associated with teaching HE. To achieve these objectives, lecture sessions were conducted covering the philosophy of home economics and instructional/creative thinking strategies in teaching HE. Following each lecture session, workshop activities were implemented, grouping participants to apply their learning. Another workshop involved individual work on developing lesson plans, allowing participants to consult with resource persons/experts for the application of knowledge from the lectures. Two teacher-participants received recognition for the best lesson plans and demonstrated teaching practices considered exemplary.
On the second and third day of the training, fewer participants were present due to scheduling conflicts with their respective school graduations. Despite the reduced numbers, those who completed the training consistently rated the activity as excellent. They expressed appreciation for activities such as lesson planning critiques and lesson demonstrations.

Research Colloquium on Consumer Studies
With DHEEd’s partner institution, the Department of Consumer Science, College of Human Ecology, Seoul National University, conducted a research colloquium with the theme, “Consumer Studies in South Korea and the Philippines” held on October 16, 2023, 1:00 PM via Zoom platform (online). The research colloquium aims for its participants to know the recent consumer-related issues and/or trends in the Philippines and South Korea that could be beneficial to their teaching, learning, and research activities; connect with researchers from other university and country; and provide feedback to the research presented by asking questions, giving comments, and sharing related insights and information.
DHEEd Launches HEELS - Home Economics Education Lecture Series
The Home Economics Education Lecture Series (HEELS) is an initiative meant to address the possible gap in leadership skills of students by providing enriching experiences beyond the classroom. The series will focus on leadership development and essential competencies that students would need for academic success, practicum courses, fieldwork, and research. Through this initiative, the Department hopes to develop well-rounded individuals who are ready to become leaders and contributors to their families and communities.

Online Repositories
What's in Your Kitchen Project
Launched in April 2020 via Facebook, What's in Your Kitchen is a crowd-sourcing project for families and households, that aims to collect recipes with ingredients that can be found in their pantry, kitchen, fridge, and/or backyard garden. This page therefore serves as a repository of these recipes that homemakers can also use as a reference in providing nutritious, creative, and affordable meals for their families and households. the DHEEd collaborates with the Department of Food Science and Nutrition for the assessment of the nutritional content of the recipes.
Position Statements
The Department drafted the College of Home Economics’ Position Statement in response to Senator Sherwin Gatchalian’s remarks on the temporary removal of HE as a subject in schools last May 9, 2020.
