By: Raeka Xiomara P. Gutierrez | September 25, 2025
The Department of Home Economics Education (DHEEd) remains dedicated to advancing research, teaching, and community engagement. From June to August of 2025, faculty and students participated in prestigious international and regional conferences, contributing to meaningful discussions and innovations that benefit Filipino society. This shows the department’s dedication to research excellence and commitment to making a positive impact on society.
The Migration Conference (TMC) 2025
Dr. Aurora Llige attended the 13th Migration Conference held in London from June 11 to 17, 2025, hosted by the Faculty of Law at the University of Greenwich. This conference brought together experts, young researchers and students, practitioners, and policymakers to discuss pressing issues related to migration, including migrant populations, diasporas, migration policies, labor migration, refugees, and the wider impacts of human mobility.
During the conference, Dr. Llige presented her research, which stemmed from her dissertation titled "Analyzing the Approach of the Government in Migration and Development through Diaspora Identities." Her study employed mixed methods, utilizing text mining and topic modeling techniques to analyze the narratives of overseas Filipinos found in one diaspora engagement program of the government, the “Presidential Award for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas.” Her findings revealed that the Philippine government actively promotes migration as a development instrument by framing the Filipino diaspora as mahusay (skilled), matalino (smart), matibay (strong), makakapwa (practices shared identity), and makabayan (patriotic). This culturally embedded approach ensures the perpetuation of migration for development purposes, emphasizing the pivotal role of Filipino identity in diaspora engagement.
International Society for Quality-Of-Life Studies Annual Conference (ISQOLS) 2025
Dr. Consuelo Chua and Dr. Llige also attended the 23rd Annual Conference of the International Society for Quality-of-Life Studies (ISQOLS). They presented a poster for their paper titled “A Metric on Filipino Family Wellbeing” with Dr. Joanne Bantang and Asst. Prof. Gabriel as co-authors at the European Convention Center, Luxembourg, last July 22-25, 2025. The conference explored diverse themes related to well-being across cultures, regions, and populations, with a particular focus on migrants, refugees, and families.

A significant highlight of their participation was sharing their research on developing a Filipino Family Well-being Scale (FFWS). This metric was designed to assess family well-being within the Filipino context, encompassing dimensions such as resource adequacy, lifestyle comfort, financial security, family relationships, health, virtuous life, and overall satisfaction. The study demonstrated high reliability scores, indicating the robustness of the scale. In the future, the authors hope to translate the scale into major Filipino languages to facilitate broader regional application. This presentation highlights the importance of culturally sensitive tools in measuring family well-being, providing valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners aiming to enhance the quality of family life in the Philippines.
Asian Regional Association for Home Economics Conference (ARAHE) 2025
Several faculty members attended the 22nd Biennial International Congress 2025 of the Asian Regional Association for Home Economics (ARAHE) conference held at the Manila Prince Hotel on August 7-10, 2025. The conference’s theme was “Empowering Future Generations: Home Economics in the Age of Advanced Technology.” Faculty members actively participated as part of the conference working committee, and also participated in poster and oral presentations. Students also presented and participated during the event.

Involvement in ARAHE’s organizing committees included Dr. Joanne Bantang, who served as Chair of the Oral Presentation Committee; Dr. Llige as Co-chair of the Oral Presentation Committee; Dr. Chua as a member of the Oral Presentation Committee; Asst. Prof. Justine Trinidad as Chair of the Workshops Committee; and Ms. Alexa Metrio as a member of the Workshops Committee; and Dr. Maria Fema Aquino as Co-Chair of the general organizing committee. Alumni from the undergraduate (BSHE) and graduate programs (MHE and PhDHE), including Alkaizer Alfad, Janine Dela Paz, Michell Molinyawe, and Judilyn Nakamura, also presented their research through oral and poster presentations.
Poster Presentation
Dr. Chua represented her thesis advisee, Mara Ysabella P. Dianzon, a 2025 BSHE graduate (Magna Cum Laude). She presented the poster titled, “Attitudes of Generation Z University Students Towards Traditional Filipino Family Values and Rituals”, with Mara as the first author. Dr. Chua's presentation demonstrated her mentorship and support in advancing student research in the field of home economics.
