On May 21, 2025, Asst. Prof. Ma. Afrecita D. Nieva, a distinguished faculty member of the Department of Home Economics Education, was invited as a resource speaker for the event titled "Tela’t Tala: Financial Weave Para sa Kabuhayan" at the Responsableng Aksyon at Serbisyo (RAS) Livelihood Center in Barangay Payatas, Quezon City. The activity was organized with the goal of empowering livelihood workers with essential skills in financial literacy and social media management.
The initiative was made possible through an invitation from the Marketing and Externals Committee of UP Diliman’s Department of Mining, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Civic Welfare Training Service (DMMME CWTS) section MCDE-E, under the guidance of Faculty-in-Charge Assistant Professor Bryan Patrick M. Carrasco, who recognized the importance of enhancing the competencies of livelihood workers to help them better manage their earnings and expand their market reach.
Following discussions with the group leader and an initial assessment of their needs, a continuing livelihood education program was suggested, which aims to empower community members with practical skills in entrepreneurship and small enterprise management. Asst. Prof. Nieva is open to collaboration to enhance the program’s reach and impact. The initiative will focus on providing hands-on training and support to help participants develop sustainable social enterprises, fostering economic resilience within the community.
This effort highlights the vital role of education in transforming livelihoods and highlights the commitment of the members of the department and other academic institutions to support community development through practical, skills-based training.
