IIT (ISM) Dhanbad
The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad (abbreviated as IIT(ISM), Dhanbad), is located in the mineral-rich state of Jharkhand, at the heart of India’s prime coking coal belt. Established in 1926 by the British Indian Government on the lines of the Royal School of Mines, London, IIT(ISM). It was formally inaugurated on December 9, 1926, by Lord Irwin, the then Viceroy of India.
On May 25, 2016, the Union Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister approved the amendment of the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, thus converting ISM Dhanbad into an Indian Institute of Technology. This makes it the third-oldest institute (after IIT Roorkee and IIT (BHU) Varanasi) to be converted into an IIT.
The institute boasts 11 hostels, each named after a precious stone, such as Diamond, Sapphire, Amber, Ruby, Opal, Jasper, and Aquamarine. Initially established to provide education in mining and applied geology, IIT ISM has evolved over the years into an institution of international repute, offering diverse programs such as B. Tech., M.A. (Digital Humanities), M. Tech., M.Sc., MBA, and Humanities and Social Sciences.

The centre functions as a nodal place that fosters collaborative initiatives at the intersections of language, literature, and technology and will model the highest standards of digital scholarship.
