RESEARCH INTERESTS:
My principal research interests lie in skin biology or dermatology and drug design on the basis of structural biology, cell biology, molecular genetics, and biological chemistry. Ongoing research projects are related to the discovery of drug leads for skin diseases, structure-based drug design, and the study of the molecular mechanisms of cytoskeletal self-assembly. Routine skills include, but are not limited to, protein biochemistry, computational modeling and design of the molecular structure with machine learning tools, fluorescent microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, CryoEM, mammalian cell biology, mouse genetics, general techniques of molecular biology, biochemistry, and dermatology. We have also collaborated with experts in X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy for structural biology. Many research projects in our lab have been done in collaboration with medical scientists and clinicians in and out of Korea.
In addition, I am interested in developing a CURE project (Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience) for college education. My recent CURE projects include the microbiome study of human skin, the association study of MAO-A gene variance with EEG/ECG responses, and the in silico design of MMP-14 inhibitors. In CURE projects, I have worked with groups of undergraduate and graduate students to engage them into the whole process of biological research with building hypothesis, hands-on experience of key experiments, data analysis and writing a paper to publish.
