Canadian Council of DGH

Set in the Himalayan foothills above the market town of Kalimpong, India, Dr. Grahams Homes (DGH) is a private residential school that promises a new life and better future to children in need. Here, 1500 children, from infancy to late adolescence, receive a first-class academic education in a strong community that nurtures their physical, social and personal development. Half of the students, from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds, attend DGH thanks to sponsors from over 7 countries, including Canada.

Reverend Dr. John Anderson Graham, a Church of Scotland missionary with a passionate vision for children in dire circumstances, founded the School in 1900. Originally, the Homes addressed the plight of abandoned and neglected Anglo-Indian girls and boys. For over a century, DGH has assisted thousands of underprivileged children to achieve their potential. For many children, their classmates, teachers and house parents at DGH is the only family and only home they have ever known. They represent a growing number of children from developing nations who do not have nutrition and health care—much less, education and opportunity. Now, the Homes serves a wide constituency of children of different ethnic and religious backgrounds from India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan.

The Canadian Council of Dr. Grahams Homes was founded in 1949 as a registered charity in Canada. The Council currently supports 8 children through its network of approximately 30 group and individual sponsors. Its small size and personal character mean the Council can operate with low overhead, guaranteeing that each yearly individual sponsorship provides crucial support for a member of the Dr. Graham Homes School community.
