DGHE & CORONAVIRUS

Important updates from our Head of Centre, Paul Talan

Earlier this week the Prime Minister announced a third national lockdown in England. This means that new regulations are expected to remain in place until the middle of February.

An the moment, all DGHE teaching will remain online until mid-February. In turn staff are asked to work from home unless otherwise arranged.

What you need to do

The new measures will apply across the whole of England and no exception will be made for those who have been vaccinated. The main changes include:

Everyone will be asked to immediately stay at home and only leave for the following specific reasons:

  • To go to work or provide voluntary or charitable services, if you cannot reasonably do so from home – this includes key workers.

  • To shop for food and/or medicine for yourself or a vulnerable person.

  • To provide care or help to a vulnerable person.

  • To seek medical care or an appointment or avoid injury, illness or risk of harm, including domestic abuse.

  • To meet your support bubble or childcare bubble where necessary, but only if you are legally permitted to form one.

  • To attend education or childcare if you are eligible.

If you’re worried

If at any stage over the next few days, you or someone you live with gets worse, or your symptoms do not get better after 7 days, use the online 111 coronavirus service https://111.nhs.uk/COVID-19. Only call 111 if you cannot get help online. In a medical emergency call 999.

Call 111 if you’re worried about a baby or child. Call 999 if the baby or child seems very unwell, is getting worse, or you think there’s something seriously wrong.

In order to support the tracking of infection we have been asked to report any students or staff who have tested positive for Covid-19. If you have tested positive please email covid@dghe.ac.uk . We will respond to each email to provide guidance and support where possible.

We will write to you again shortly with further information about what you can expect during lockdown and how you can provide your feedback to us so that we can be as responsive as possible to all of you.

Once again we would like to thank you for all for your hard work to date.

Take care of yourselves and we wish you and yours all the very best.

Regards,

Paul Talan

WELLBEING CORNER

What a way to start the year - it’s January 2021 and Tier 5 is here again!

Can we improve our experience of it this time? Yes we can!

No time like the present to save money and try an easy way to look after our Wellbeing. This is of course in addition to registering all the steps for the Walk for Wellbeing we’ve been doing over the holidays - it’s not too late to join up😊 – you can ‘guesstimate’ the steps you’ve done over the last month (it’s about 3000 steps per half hour) and enter them on the App.

In recent years the UK has national campaigns during January 2, both of which aim to improve our overall health and save money.

They are Veganuary and Dry January. Literally, food for thought.

If you’re interested in Veganuary but eat quite a bit of meat and can’t face going ‘cold turkey’ (no pun intended!) think about simply introducing more vegetarian meals each week, like having ‘Meat-free Mondays’ for example. There are so many wonderful cuisines of the world just based on vegetables that you can try. The many Romanian students we have may find inspiration for replacing meat with veg in traditional dishes and others may like to just try a bit of different cuisine! Cooking with more vegetables saves money too. Don’t forget you can use your TOTUM student card to get discounts on food shopping, for example in the Co-op supermarket if you have one near you.

Incidentally, later this year DGHE will be launching a DGHE ‘Corona Cookbook’ – and we’ll be asking students and staff to send in their favourite recipes! Get ahead and send me your recipe soon…….

Evidence shows that people have been drinking more at home (a lot more) during Covid 19, and now the miserable weather and lockdown has set in again the temptation is even greater.

Why do Dry January? Well, the benefits to your wallet, sleep, waistline and general health are indisputable– even if you don’t drink much at all. Have a go and see how much you save and how much better you feel.

Does drinking often make you argue with you partner? Improve your personal relationships by drinking a little less. If you can’t face stopping completely for a month – although this method works best for long-term results – simply reduce it as often as you can.

Best of all you don’t have to do these in January, you can do them anytime in the year, so do revisit the ideas later in the year if you don’t feel up to it now.
