Aveiro is a city in central Portugal, 70 km south of Porto. It is commonly refered to as the Venice of Portugal, thanks to its location in the delta of the Aveiro river and a system of canals across the city. The river itself is a unique ecosystem with a great variety of flora and fauna. It is fairly easy to spot herons and flamingos close to the salinas, a zone of the town with a historic salt production. Even though University of Aveiro was founded relatively recently in 1973, it quickly became one of Portugal's main higher education and research institutions. It campus is located close to the center and includes 20 specialised research schools including CIDMA -- Center for Research and Dedelopment in Mathematics and Applications.
