Dewey is a free Chrome extension designed to help users find similar academic papers. We are committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring you have a positive experience using our extension.
Dewey collects minimal data to provide its core functionality:
1. Current Tab URL: When you activate the Dewey extension, we collect the URL of the currently active tab in your Chrome browser.
2. Current Tab Title: Along with the URL, we also collect the title of the currently active tab.
3. Your preference for light or dark mode
We do NOT collect any other information!
Active Tab:
The activeTab perm is needed to access the URL of the current tab when the user activates the extension. We need the URL of the current research paper the user is viewing. This is necessary to find similar papers since our backend server is trained to retrieve similar URLs given an input URL.
Storage:
We ONLY use storage for one thing! Persisting light/dark mode. The storage permission is needed to save the user preferences for light or dark mode. This ensures that the user's preferred theme persists between sessions. When a user toggles the theme, we save this preference to Chrome's storage. We don't use storage for anything else.
Bookmarks:
The bookmark permission is needed to save research papers directly to a dedicated "Dewey Bookmarks" folder in the user's Chrome bookmarks. This allows users to easily organize and access papers they find interesting through our extension. When a user clicks the "Bookmark" button for a paper, we create or access this folder and save the paper's URL and title there for future reference!
The URL and title of the current tab are used solely for the purpose of finding similar academic papers. This information is:
1. Sent to the Exa API to perform the search for similar papers.
2. Not stored by us beyond the duration of your current Dewey session.
3. Not used for any other purpose beyond providing the core functionality of finding similar papers.
We do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer your information to outside parties. The only external service we use is the Exa API (exa.ai), which receives the current tab URL and title to perform the search for similar papers.
We do not retain any of the collected information (URL and title) beyond your current search session. Once you close the extension or navigate away from the page, this information is discarded.
As we do not store any personal data, there is no personal information for users to access, modify, or delete. The extension's functionality can be controlled by enabling or disabling it in your Chrome browser. You can delete the extension at any time.
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date.
If you have any questions about this Privacy Policy, please contact the developer at https://x.com/itsandrewgao through Direct Messages. We will try to respond promptly.
