If you want a rugged, single-purpose tool for checking tire pressure and tread depth on the go, choose DEWALT Dual Function Pencil; if you need a comprehensive assortment of high-fidelity capacitors for building or repairing car audio systems, choose Rustark 18Pcs. These two products solve completely different problems, yet both find their home in vehicles—one under the seat for safety and maintenance, the other inside the amplifier rack for sound quality. I have analyzed the specifications and design intent of both to help you decide which one belongs in your toolkit without getting confused by marketing fluff.
• DEWALT Dual Function Pencil: Its biggest strength is the dual functionality combining a 10-70 PSI gauge with a tread depth measurement tool in a compact, pocket-ready form; its trade-off is that it is strictly a single-use device for tires and offers no versatility beyond that specific mechanical task. This pick is for drivers who prioritize safety checks and quick adjustments while traveling.
• Rustark 18Pcs: Its biggest strength is the variety of values (nine distinct capacitances) included in a durable kit designed for precise audio signal filtering; its trade-off is that it is an electronic component requiring soldering skills and is not a ready-to-install solution out of the box. This pick is for DIY enthusiasts and audio builders looking to fine-tune speaker crossovers or repair amplifiers.
The DEWALT Dual Function Pencil is engineered for the driver who treats vehicle maintenance as a proactive habit rather than a reactive chore. The design centers around portability and immediate utility. With dimensions of roughly 10 inches long and weighing less than a tenth of a pound, this unit slips easily into a coat pocket or attaches to a belt loop via its integrated metal clip. This isn't a bulky floor jack or a digital scanner; it is a manual instrument built for speed. You do not need batteries or a screen to get a reading. The slide indicator mechanism allows you to see tire pressure from 10 to 70 PSI directly, eliminating the guesswork that often leads to under-inflated tires.
For those who drive hybrid cars or any modern vehicle, maintaining proper tire pressure is critical for efficiency and battery longevity. The inclusion of a tread depth gauge marked in 1/16-inch increments adds significant value here. Instead of carrying a separate coin or dedicated depth gauge, this tool handles both measurements in one motion. The deflator valve button located on the back of the head is a thoughtful feature for anyone who has ever over-inflated a tire. It allows for controlled air release so you can dial the pressure down to the exact manufacturer recommendation without needing a pump or a separate tool to bleed air.
You should buy this if you are a daily commuter, a road tripper, or a fleet manager who needs a reliable way to check tire health quickly. The durable construction suggests it can withstand the rigors of a glovebox or trunk environment. However, if you are looking for a digital readout, a tool that stores data, or a device that measures anything other than tire pressure and tread depth, this is not the right choice. It is a specialized mechanical tool with a singular focus on safety and tire integrity. If you need something more advanced, like a TPMS sensor reader, this pencil will not replace it.

The Rustark 18Pcs kit serves a very different audience: the car audio enthusiast, the electronics hobbyist, or the technician rebuilding an amplifier. Unlike the DEWALT tool which is a standalone product, this is a collection of components intended to be integrated into a larger system. The kit contains 18 capacitors across nine common values, ranging from 0.68uF up to 4.7uF, with two pieces of each value provided. This variety is essential because car audio crossovers require specific capacitance values to filter frequencies correctly for tweeters, mid-range drivers, and woofers.
These are axial polypropylene film capacitors rated at 250V, a specification that indicates they can handle the voltage spikes common in car audio environments. The metallized film construction is key for audio applications, offering low signal loss and low distortion. When building a crossover network, the goal is to send only the high frequencies to the tweeter and block them from the woofer. The precision tolerance of ±5% ensures that the frequency splitting happens exactly where it should, preventing muddiness in the bass or harshness in the highs. The epoxy resin sealing and flame-retardant tape add a layer of safety and durability, ensuring the components won't fail due to heat or vibration inside a vehicle.
This kit is ideal for someone working on a DIY project or upgrading an existing stereo system. The reusable storage box keeps the small components organized, which is vital since losing a single capacitor can halt a build. The axial leads allow for vertical or horizontal installation, giving flexibility when fitting parts into tight spaces within an amp chassis or a custom enclosure. However, this is not a "plug-and-play" item. You must understand basic soldering techniques and circuit theory to use these effectively. If you are simply looking to replace a blown part in a factory radio without knowing how to test circuits, this might be overwhelming. But for anyone serious about sound quality, having this range of values on hand is indispensable.
• Best for Tire Safety Checks → DEWALT Dual Function Pencil. No other tool in this comparison offers a direct method for measuring air pressure and tread depth simultaneously.
• Best for Audio System Tuning → Rustark 18Pcs. Only this kit provides the necessary range of capacitance values required to build or adjust speaker crossovers.
• Best for Portability → DEWALT Dual Function Pencil. Its lightweight, clip-on design makes it instantly accessible anywhere in the car without taking up shelf space.
• Best for Versatility in Projects → Rustark 18Pcs. While the DEWALT tool does one thing well, the Rustark kit supports multiple projects, repairs, and experiments in car audio and electronics.
• Best for Immediate Results → DEWALT Dual Function Pencil. You can measure pressure and adjust it in seconds without tools or power sources.
• Best for Precision Signal Control → Rustark 18Pcs. The polypropylene film and tight tolerance ensure clean audio separation, which a mechanical gauge cannot achieve.
• Best for Emergency Roadside Use → DEWALT Dual Function Pencil. If a tire is low, you can fix it immediately. Capacitors cannot fix a flat tire or a blown fuse.
• Best for Long-Term Audio Upgrades → Rustark 18Pcs. Properly tuned crossovers improve the lifespan of speakers and the overall listening experience for years.
I would buy the DEWALT Dual Function Pencil if my primary concern was keeping my vehicle safe and efficient on the road. It solves a tangible, daily problem with a simple, robust design that requires zero maintenance. Conversely, I would choose the Rustark 18Pcs if I were actively building a custom car audio setup and needed the freedom to experiment with frequency splitting. Both products excel in their respective domains, but for the average driver focused on reliability and safety, especially for hybrid cars where tire pressure impacts range significantly, the DEWALT tool is the more practical investment. It is a piece of equipment you hope you never need to use urgently, but when you do, it works exactly as advertised.
The DEWALT gauge measures from 10 to 70 PSI, which covers standard passenger vehicles and light trucks. Heavy-duty commercial trucks often require gauges rated for higher pressures, so verify your truck's maximum tire pressure before relying solely on this unit.
Yes, installing these capacitors requires basic soldering equipment. The axial leads are designed to be soldered directly to crossover boards or PCB pads, so you will need a soldering iron, solder, and knowledge of audio wiring diagrams.
Absolutely. The product details confirm they are suitable for household appliances, general audio amplifiers, and various DIY electronics projects where signal filtering is required.
No, the DEWALT Dual Function Pencil is a purely mechanical device. It uses a slide indicator and a spring-loaded piston mechanism, meaning it requires no batteries, charging, or electronic calibration to function accurately.
