According to the July 30, 1998 Baltimore Sun Devon Dexter Denton, 18, of the 2300 block of Lauretta Avenue was found in the 3600 block of Winterbourne Road on May 25, 1997. Mr. Denton had been kidnapped and shot.
In July of 1998 four men were charged with 1st degree murder and kidnapping. They were: Darius Bunch, 23 of the 800 block of Franklintown Road, Jerome Gourdine of the 1215 Linworth Street, Sir John Anthony Hosear of 925 Franklintown Road and Donte Dwayne Johnson of 708 Edgewood Street. On March 22, 1999 the state nolle prosequied the case, deciding not to pursue the charges against the four men.
Oddly enough, or maybe not so oddly, Darius Bunch was shot himself on July 10, 2006 in the 700 block of North Longwood Street and was later shot again, this time fatally, on April 1, 2008 in the 800 block of Franklintown Road. Sir John Anthony was a victim of a stabbing by the owner of the
Tunnel nightclub at 325 Eutaw in 2001.
Update 03/13/12 I had a former classmate of Devon Dexter email me a while back asking about this case, she had fond memories of the victim.
Also, I had another reader make this comment about the suspect in the case, Darius Bunch: Darius Bunch, charged along with three others for the murder of Devon Denton and later killed in 2008, was one of the best men in Baltimore although he didn't always make wise decisions. He was a member of The Baltimore Westsiders. He was a loving son, a GREAT father, brother and friend. His presence is truly missed.
Update 06/24/13 A reader emailed me information about Devon Dexter Denton. She tells me Mr. Denton had so many friends and was known anywhere he went. He was silly, and very close to his mother. He was very giving and trustworthy to a fault. The reader also sent me his obituary which is seen below. Here is the transcription:
DEVON DEXTER DENTON, son of Reva and the late Rogers Denton, was born April 12, 1979 in Baltimore, Maryland. He departed this life on May 25, 1997.
Devon received his education at Walbrook Senior High School. He worked at Bentalou Elementary School during the summer and recently was employed at the American Baltimore Ice Company.
Devon, affectionately known as “Whites” to his friends was a very energetic person. He loved to play all sports, especially basketball. His number one love was his music. Very rarely would he be without his radio and cassette tapes. Always playing “No Limit Solder” because that was what he was. He would always be there for his friends. Soft spoken as he was, Devon made lots of friends. “Whites” will always be remembered as that friend, the “No Limit Soldier”.
Devon met Lolitia Young, the apple of his eye. This blossomed into a blissful relationship. Out of this relationship they’re expect a bundle of joy, a son. Lil’ Devon Jr. will be his name.
Devon leaves to cherish his loving memory: his mother, Reva Denton; his brother, Rogers Denton; a niece, Jasmine Denton; two grandfathers, William Johnson and William Denton; eleven aunts, ten uncles, a devoted friend, Lolitia Young, a host of other relatives and friends.
