Dévi Mboto (Dé-EvalSam David Mboto) is an award-winning Efik creative, actor, model, and director based between Toronto, Canada, and the United States. Recognized within the West African diaspora and international creative circuits, Mboto holds the distinction of being one of the youngest Nigerian runway models in history, as well as the youngest independent runway model of Efik descent to achieve professional recognition on international platforms.
Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Mboto was raised in an academically driven household by parents working in the analytic sciences. From an early age, he was identified as intellectually advanced, entering a highly accelerated educational trajectory that shaped both his discipline and creative curiosity.
By the age of six, he was already independently exploring poetry, coding, engineering concepts, and psychology—fields that would later inform his multidisciplinary artistic identity. At nine years old, he began high school education at Whitesands High School in Lagos, demonstrating an unusually advanced academic placement for his age.
After relocating to Canada, he re-entered secondary education at age fourteen within a specialized gifted program designed to align with Canadian academic standards while supporting accelerated learners.
His artistic development began early as well. Mboto started performing in theatre at nine years old in Lagos, marking the beginning of his engagement with performance and storytelling. After moving to Canada, he committed to formal screen training to refine his natural performance instincts into professional on-camera technique.
He studied screen acting in Toronto at L.B. Studios, training under veteran actor-director Louis Baumander (No Exit, Future Fear) and actress Melinda Shankar (Degrassi). Alongside his acting development, he pursued studies in design and creative systems as an alumnus of the BBSD program at the University of Toronto’s John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design. He remains active as both a poet and songwriter, integrating literary structure into his broader artistic practice.
Mboto has rapidly developed a growing body of work in film and television. He is best known for his performances in the drama Fearfully Made as Micah Adebayo (2026), the independent feature Neon’s Around the Corner as Levi (2025), and his breakout lead role in the teen drama-comedy Prayer Circle (2026), where he portrays the central character “Levi.”
Across his screen work, Mboto is recognized for emotionally grounded performances and a strong presence in character-driven narratives, particularly within youth, diaspora, and coming-of-age storytelling.
A filmmaker from an early stage in his career, Mboto began directing and developing original screen projects at the age of fifteen. His work as a director reflects a focus on identity, displacement, cultural tension, resilience, and psychological conflict.
He is the creator, director, and lead creative force behind Peregrinus, a YA science-fiction thriller series. The project blends diaspora storytelling with high-concept genre elements, exploring themes of survival, identity fragmentation, and humanity’s evolving relationship with unknown forces.
Through Peregrinus, Mboto is contributing to the expansion of globally conscious science fiction, with a particular emphasis on increasing African and diaspora representation within genre storytelling. His approach prioritizes character depth within large-scale conceptual worlds, aiming to bridge independent storytelling with commercially viable narrative structures.
Mboto made his breakout entry into the fashion industry at Toronto Fashion Week 2024 on his 14th birthday, where he became the youngest Efik runway model on record. During the event, he walked for multiple international and emerging brands including Ohh So Swag, La Coutts, and Couture-Cultures-Arts (CCA). He also achieved the distinction of opening and closing the runway for luxury label Gervacy, marking a significant milestone in his early modeling career.
In March 2025, Mboto reached a major editorial milestone with a feature in a Vogue Magazine Spring/Summer promotional campaign. The campaign, developed in collaboration with Kids Runway Inc., highlighted contemporary designer collections showcased during Toronto Fashion Week, expanding his visibility within international fashion media.
Beyond performance and directing, Mboto is an active poet and lyricist. His written work explores themes of identity, migration, political memory, and personal transformation through a structured and reflective literary style.
His early piece Arescentum Memoria (meaning “the fading of memory”) established his analytical approach to language and emotion. He later expanded his thematic range with Arescentes Paradesi, a politically conscious work addressing historical injustices faced by Indigenous communities.
His most personal work, Stay Out of Time, reflects on immigration, displacement, and psychological adaptation within new cultural environments. The piece captures both vulnerability and resilience, serving as a literary extension of his lived experience navigating multiple countries and identities.
Mboto is also recognized as a cultural performer and dancer. At the 2025 AkwaCross Toronto End-of-Year Gala, he delivered a live performance combining traditional movement with acrobatic elements, earning significant acclaim.
In recognition of his artistic contribution and cultural representation, the AkwaCross Nigerian Heritage Foundation awarded him the Pinnacle of Excellence Award, named him a “Promising Efik Figure,” and designated him as a “Future Ambassador” for the global promotion of Akwa Ibom, Calabar, and Cross Riverian cultural arts.
Across film, fashion, writing, and directing, Mboto continues to develop as a multidisciplinary creator working at the intersection of performance and authorship. His work reflects a consistent focus on narrative identity, cultural memory, and character-driven storytelling, positioning him within a new generation of global, multi-hyphenate creatives shaping contemporary film and media.
