I was tasked with creating a phone stand that could fit in a 6in x6in x6in area, using only scrap material and no adhesives. My idea was to create a teepee shape with one side of the stand running through the other for support. I used a rotary tool to cut out all peices of carboard. I cut out two legs, one slightly larger than the other, and cut a slit in the top of the larger leg for the smaller leg to slide into. I then cut identical, verticle slits on the bottoms of each leg to allow for the support beam to slide through.
After reviewing prototype 1, it became clear that running one leg through the other only weakened the overall structure. For iteration 2, I decided to have the legs rest against each other with a collar plate surrounding them for stability. I also added notches in the support beam so it would grab each leg, no longer sliding. As an added factor, the new design made for an easier manufacturing process.
My final design works very well for using the phone in a landscape fashion. The design allows for hands free usage, easy charging, and a comfortable viewing experience. The phone remains stable when the screen is tapped and the stand is always safe for use. The stand is also easily deconstructable for storage. Overall, this project made me innovate and find ways to solve a problem I have had. Using scrap materials and finding a way to keep them stable with no fasteners really made my mind work hard. I feel succesful in my creation and feel ready to tackle a new task.
