Theatre On Ice (TOI) is a form of competitive figure skating that combines the grace of figure skating with the excitement of theatre and dance. Known as “Ballet on Ice” in Europe, TOI teams consist of 8-28 skaters telling a story together. TOI brings skaters together and increases club skaters, giving athletes the chance to be a part of a team, travel locally (sometimes internationally!) and make new friends.
TOI competitions consists of two programs: the free skate (long program)and the choreographic exercise (short program). Programs are evaluated on technical merit and presentation with emphasis on originality, costuming, artistry and musicality.
Theatre on Ice is recognized by U.S. Figure Skating. The guidelines outline the TOI requirements (2023-2024 Guidelines). The Detroit Ice Theatre teams compete in the National Theatre on Ice Competition in late June: 2024 Nationals website.
Detroit Ice Theatre offers regular off-ice training/dance, weekly on-ice practices with professional and certified coaches, performance opportunities, two competitions (minimum), social events, and fun as a team!
