Coinbase Extension | Getting Started: Secure Device & Setup
The Coinbase Wallet Extension provides a convenient way to access a self-custody crypto wallet directly through a compatible desktop browser. It can be used to manage digital assets and connect with supported decentralized applications without relying entirely on a mobile device. Before using the extension, however, it is important to complete the setup carefully and protect the credentials that control access to your wallet. {"fallbackMarkdown":"(Coinbase)","reference":{"matched_text":"","prefix":null,"start_idx":535,"end_idx":567,"safe_urls":["https://www.coinbase.com/en-in/wallet/articles/getting-started-extension","https://www.coinbase.com/en-in/wallet/articles/getting-started-extension?utm_source=chatgpt.com","https://www.coinbase.com/learn/wallet/setting-up-coinbase-wallet-on-computer-via-chrome","https://www.coinbase.com/learn/wallet/setting-up-coinbase-wallet-on-computer-via-chrome?utm_source=chatgpt.com"],"refs":[],"alt":"(Coinbase)","prompt_text":null,"type":"grouped_webpages","items":[{"title":"Getting Started: Wallet Extension","url":"https://www.coinbase.com/en-in/wallet/articles/getting-started-extension?utm_source=chatgpt.com","attribution":"Coinbase","pub_date":null,"snippet":"","attribution_segments":null,"supporting_websites":[{"title":"Setting up Coinbase Wallet on your computer via Chrome | Coinbase","url":"https://www.coinbase.com/learn/wallet/setting-up-coinbase-wallet-on-computer-via-chrome?utm_source=chatgpt.com","pub_date":null,"snippet":"","attribution":"Coinbase"}],"refs":[{"turn_index":0,"ref_type":"search","ref_index":0},{"turn_index":0,"ref_type":"search","ref_index":2}],"hue":null,"attributions":null}],"style":null,"fallback_items":null,"status":"done","error":null},"showLoginRequiredCard":false}
Install the Coinbase Extension
Start by downloading the Coinbase Wallet Extension from the official browser store. Always verify that you are installing the legitimate extension rather than a similarly named third-party product. Once installed, open the extension and choose whether you want to create a new wallet or import an existing one. Coinbase currently documents both options for getting started with the extension. {"fallbackMarkdown":"(Coinbase)","reference":{"matched_text":"","prefix":null,"start_idx":997,"end_idx":1016,"safe_urls":["https://www.coinbase.com/en-in/wallet/articles/getting-started-extension","https://www.coinbase.com/en-in/wallet/articles/getting-started-extension?utm_source=chatgpt.com"],"refs":[],"alt":"(Coinbase)","prompt_text":null,"type":"grouped_webpages","items":[{"title":"Getting Started: Wallet Extension","url":"https://www.coinbase.com/en-in/wallet/articles/getting-started-extension?utm_source=chatgpt.com","attribution":"Coinbase","pub_date":null,"snippet":"","attribution_segments":null,"supporting_websites":[],"refs":[{"turn_index":0,"ref_type":"search","ref_index":0}],"hue":null,"attributions":null}],"style":null,"fallback_items":null,"status":"done","error":null},"showLoginRequiredCard":false}
For official guidance, see the Coinbase extension getting started guide before beginning your setup.
Create or Import Your Wallet
If you are new to self-custody, select the option to create a new wallet. During setup, you will receive a 12-word recovery phrase. This phrase is extremely important because it provides access to your wallet. Coinbase explains that it cannot recover the recovery phrase if you lose it. Store it securely and never share it with another person or enter it into an untrusted website. {"fallbackMarkdown":"(Coinbase)","reference":{"matched_text":"","prefix":null,"start_idx":1612,"end_idx":1644,"safe_urls":["https://www.coinbase.com/en-in/wallet/articles/getting-started-extension","https://www.coinbase.com/en-in/wallet/articles/getting-started-extension?utm_source=chatgpt.com","https://www.coinbase.com/learn/wallet/setting-up-coinbase-wallet-on-computer-via-chrome","https://www.coinbase.com/learn/wallet/setting-up-coinbase-wallet-on-computer-via-chrome?utm_source=chatgpt.com"],"refs":[],"alt":"(Coinbase)","prompt_text":null,"type":"grouped_webpages","items":[{"title":"Getting Started: Wallet Extension","url":"https://www.coinbase.com/en-in/wallet/articles/getting-started-extension?utm_source=chatgpt.com","attribution":"Coinbase","pub_date":null,"snippet":"","attribution_segments":null,"supporting_websites":[{"title":"Setting up Coinbase Wallet on your computer via Chrome | Coinbase","url":"https://www.coinbase.com/learn/wallet/setting-up-coinbase-wallet-on-computer-via-chrome?utm_source=chatgpt.com","pub_date":null,"snippet":"","attribution":"Coinbase"}],"refs":[{"turn_index":0,"ref_type":"search","ref_index":0},{"turn_index":0,"ref_type":"search","ref_index":2}],"hue":null,"attributions":null}],"style":null,"fallback_items":null,"status":"done","error":null},"showLoginRequiredCard":false}
If you already have a compatible self-custody wallet, the Coinbase Extension can also allow you to import it using its recovery phrase. Recovery phrases can be portable between supported wallet providers, while the password you create for the Coinbase Extension remains specific to that wallet setup. {"fallbackMarkdown":"(Coinbase)","reference":{"matched_text":"","prefix":null,"start_idx":1947,"end_idx":1966,"safe_urls":["https://www.coinbase.com/en-in/wallet/articles/getting-started-extension","https://www.coinbase.com/en-in/wallet/articles/getting-started-extension?utm_source=chatgpt.com"],"refs":[],"alt":"(Coinbase)","prompt_text":null,"type":"grouped_webpages","items":[{"title":"Getting Started: Wallet Extension","url":"https://www.coinbase.com/en-in/wallet/articles/getting-started-extension?utm_source=chatgpt.com","attribution":"Coinbase","pub_date":null,"snippet":"","attribution_segments":null,"supporting_websites":[],"refs":[{"turn_index":0,"ref_type":"search","ref_index":0}],"hue":null,"attributions":null}],"style":null,"fallback_items":null,"status":"done","error":null},"showLoginRequiredCard":false}
Secure Your Device
A secure wallet setup begins with a secure computer. Keep your operating system, browser, and security software updated. Use a strong device password and avoid installing browser extensions from unknown sources. When accessing your wallet, use a trusted network and be cautious with unfamiliar websites that request wallet connections.
Your recovery phrase should never be stored in screenshots, public cloud folders, email messages, or ordinary text files. Coinbase recommends keeping the phrase in a secure location, such as a password manager or a safely stored written copy. {"fallbackMarkdown":"(Coinbase)","reference":{"matched_text":"","prefix":null,"start_idx":2571,"end_idx":2590,"safe_urls":["https://www.coinbase.com/en-in/wallet/articles/getting-started-extension","https://www.coinbase.com/en-in/wallet/articles/getting-started-extension?utm_source=chatgpt.com"],"refs":[],"alt":"(Coinbase)","prompt_text":null,"type":"grouped_webpages","items":[{"title":"Getting Started: Wallet Extension","url":"https://www.coinbase.com/en-in/wallet/articles/getting-started-extension?utm_source=chatgpt.com","attribution":"Coinbase","pub_date":null,"snippet":"","attribution_segments":null,"supporting_websites":[],"refs":[{"turn_index":0,"ref_type":"search","ref_index":0}],"hue":null,"attributions":null}],"style":null,"fallback_items":null,"status":"done","error":null},"showLoginRequiredCard":false}
Create a Strong Wallet Password
After backing up your recovery phrase, create a strong password for regular access to the extension. Avoid using passwords that you already use on other websites. Keep the password private because Coinbase states that wallet passwords cannot be recovered by the provider. {"fallbackMarkdown":"(Coinbase)","reference":{"matched_text":"","prefix":null,"start_idx":2900,"end_idx":2919,"safe_urls":["https://www.coinbase.com/en-in/wallet/articles/getting-started-extension","https://www.coinbase.com/en-in/wallet/articles/getting-started-extension?utm_source=chatgpt.com"],"refs":[],"alt":"(Coinbase)","prompt_text":null,"type":"grouped_webpages","items":[{"title":"Getting Started: Wallet Extension","url":"https://www.coinbase.com/en-in/wallet/articles/getting-started-extension?utm_source=chatgpt.com","attribution":"Coinbase","pub_date":null,"snippet":"","attribution_segments":null,"supporting_websites":[],"refs":[{"turn_index":0,"ref_type":"search","ref_index":0}],"hue":null,"attributions":null}],"style":null,"fallback_items":null,"status":"done","error":null},"showLoginRequiredCard":false}
For additional setup information, review the official Coinbase Wallet setup instructions.
Start Using the Extension Safely
Once setup is complete, you can fund your wallet and begin exploring supported blockchain applications. Before approving any transaction, carefully review the website, wallet address, asset, network, and requested permissions. Remember that a self-custody wallet places responsibility for protecting access credentials with you.
The Coinbase Extension can make desktop-based crypto activity more convenient, but security should remain the priority. Download the extension from an official source, protect your recovery phrase, use a strong password, and avoid suspicious links or requests for private wallet information. With these precautions in place, you can get started with the Coinbase Extension more confidently and maintain control over your self-custody wallet.
