Desjardins Insurance is the insurance unit of Desjardins Group, the largest association of credit unions in Canada. In 2015, Desjardins Insurance acquired the Canadian operations of U.S.-based insurer State Farm,[1] which helped Desjardins become the second biggest property and casualty insurer in Canada, and first in Ontario.[2] This acquisition almost doubled the premiums, going from 2 billion to 4 billion.[3] 50% of their volume now comes from State Farm, but other parts also come from Desjardin's group insurance (The Personal), from white labels activities with Scotia Bank, from brokerage with Western Financial and finally from activities related to the exclusive agents of Quebec.[4] In 2018, State Farm Canada was officially rebranded to Desjardins Insurance through Desjardins Insurance Agents. The whole transition is to be completed by December 31, 2019.[5]

At Universit Laval, all international students are automatically covered by the Universit Laval group health and hospitalization insurance plan through Desjardins Insurance. This medical insurance plan covers medical and hospital expenses, as well as the cost of prescription drugs.

For your non-eligible family members (for example, children aged 18 or over and your spouse), you can get insurance coverage for your family members through Desjardins Insurance too. For more information, see Visitors to Canada Insurance and other private health insurance.

We recommend that you carefully read the Desjardins Insurance policy to make sure all your needs are covered. If in doubt, contact Desjardins Insurance. You can take out additional insurance if you have other specific needs, such as pre-existing health conditions.

If you plan to arrive in a Canadian province other than Qubec and stay there before you arrive in Qubec, it is your responsibility to take out comprehensive travel-health insurance and emergency medical insurance for the duration of your journey until you arrive in the province of Qubec.

International students enrolled in a regular program who are eligible for the RAMQ can also take out supplemental health insurance through their student association with ASEQ. Visit the section "Supplemental health insurance with ASEQ" for more information.

If you think you may fall under one of these exemptions, write to assurances@reg.ulaval.ca. Having private insurance does not mean that you are exempt from getting Desjardins health and hospitalization insurance.

Students enrolled in a Universit Laval regular program are automatically covered with supplemental dental insurance through their student association (CADEUL or AELIES) in collaboration with the Alliance pour la sant tudiante au Qubec [Qubec student health alliance] (ASEQ) and Desjardins Financial Security. They have the option of cancelling it (before a certain deadline). Dental insurance includes the Programme mieux-tre (mental health and well-being).

Students enrolled in a Universit Laval regular program and who are covered by the RAMQ can take out supplemental health insurance through their student association (CADEUL or AELIES) in collaboration with the Alliance pour la sant tudiante au Qubec [Qubec student health alliance] (ASEQ) and Desjardins Financial Security. You will not be enrolled automatically. You have to enrol yourself (before a certain deadline) if you are interested in getting this insurance coverage. The health insurance is an add-on to the RAMQ. It covers certain vision care, certain paramedic services, and travel insurance.

This table provides a summary of insurance coverage. Be sure to double-check your coverage, conditions, and exemptions before seeking non-urgent care. Your insurance may reimburse only 50% or 80%, not 100%, of the cost of certain services, or there may be a maximum annual limit or deductible.
