My name is Mukul Seth, but known to the community as Moo. My background has been pretty eventful. I am an electrical engineer and was part of the team that designed WiFi for iPhone and may other smartphones. I stayed in California for 13 years, more specifically Silicon Valley. I then took 3 years off to travel to various places such as Nepal, Europe, Central America, New Zealand and India. Soon i ended up in San Antonio and met my wonderful wife who wanted me to pursue something. So i stopped traveling and met a man named Amin in March 2017 who previously owned the store. I soon took over the store to get more involved in the community. This store isn’t for my personal gain or making money, it’s for the community.
This is a community hangout. A place to bring neighbors together. A place to talk about issues that we don't agree on. A place to celebrate holidays. A place for inviting public servants and talk to them about the issues that affect us. A place where youth can get together.
My teenage nephew and niece used to go on their phones after school. I soon realized that teenagers need a safe space to socialize rather than be on their phone. The issues are that kids don’t have spaces to hang out. Other stores and places think that they’re up to no good or loitering, but in reality they just need somewhere to be themselves. I’ve also realized that the school system is too rigid, you’re not allowed to question or be “out of the ordinary”. Lastly, I do care about their health. They’re consuming too much junk food and high-fructose corn syrup. Yes, here they do have a choice of soda and candy. Change is something that has to happen slowly. I’ve been trying to introduce them to natural smoothies instead.
Now, let’s get into the store and what it has to offer. First, it’s a very safe, no judgement zone with security cameras. The parents have the option to log into the cameras and see exactly what’s going on. It’s a no bully zone and the bullies are banned until they realize the error of their ways. They have to choose what is more important, being a bully or hanging out with their friends. Here we’re unique, we have a FREE arcade machine with 500 games, a chalkboard wall and various musical instruments. Soon, we are planning to hold activities, events and game tournaments.
We have future ideas for the store, we want to have professional and peer tutoring. Sometimes parents don’t know how to help them with their school work. So we can help with that. The future is technology, so we would also like to hold iphone and coding classes where they can create their own apps and games. Make their ideas come to life. I’ve noticed there are quite a lot of homeschooled kids in this area, so they are always welcome here to meet other kids and make friendships. I would love to have more stores like this near other schools, somewhere the students can walk to. I feel like stores like this can help the community get connected and thrive.
