Make It A Show Choreography by Desirée James
Make It A Show is an exploration into the aesthetic of camp, and its creation of unease. This unease, generated by the liberation of unhinged authentic expression, is rooted in social order, “palatable spaces”, and maintaining control. This process explores the origins of disco lofts as queer spaces where the community could thrive and be authentically themselves. Make It A Showstrives to bring the essence of complete confidence into a range of expression in performance. Exploring how a fantasy can be created and deconstructed, this piece aims to target how campness can play on the bizarre and absurd while also maintaining an element of poise. There is an element of chaos within this work that deals with disintegration and further plays with the audience’s comfort levels. It disorients the viewer and showcases the grotesque by exploring the ability to create an enjoyable experience for an audience with an underlying feeling of unease.
