Desirée Keresztes James(she/they) is an emerging contemporary dance artist whose artistic practice explores queering the lens and investigating the presentation of camp. Originally from Toronto, Canada, Desirée has been based in Tio’tià:ke/Montréal, QC since 2023. They currently hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts in contemporary dance from Simon Fraser University and have furthered their studies at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and the Big Bang program through Espace Ouvert. By using her background of floorwork techniques, Gaga technique, and Cunningham technique she is interested in subverting expectations and challenging traditional norms, particularly within gender, sexuality, and identity. She aims to explore the human body in a manner that challenges conventional standards of beauty and aesthetic appeal. As a performer they have had the opportunity to work with Alexandra Caprara(ULTRAVIOLETS), Rob Kitsos(Moving Matter), and Emmalena Fredrikkson(Ecdysis) with work being presented nationally and internationally, most recently performing at IndieFest Vancouver (ULTRAVIOLETS). Within her own creation, Desirée has been developing a multi-stage creative research process entitled Disrupting Synth Clarity, the first rendition having recently premiered at NextFest 2025. She is also the recipient of a month-long residency in November through Áras Éanna in Inis Oírr, Ireland, as part of a creative research and upcoming collaboration. By blending high and low art, she aims to create bold performances that celebrate authenticity and embrace difference. Through her research of the aesthetic of camp, she incorporates elements of irony, exaggeration, and theatricality, inviting audiences to engage with alternative perspectives.
